Game Day Gazette for Tuesday May 12, 2026

Game Day Gazette

  May 12, 2026

History was made today as the Austin Senior Softball League had its first scheduled Tuesday morning games. As you recall, the City of Austin closed Krieg and the other parks around the city for a city-wide training exercise. The folks at Parks & Rec agreed to let us reschedule Monday’s slate of games for today. There was some concern with turnout given that Mondays and Thursday are dedicated softball days but there were only four players drawn from the bucket in each of today’s games. We are going to reach out to PARD to see if we can use Tuesdays in the future to make up games that are rained out and will let you know their response.

Game 1 8:30 a.m. Orange (2-2-0) vs. Red (2-2-0)

First & Second Inning Recap:

Orange– Manager Bruce Barnett decided to shake this up and switched Adam Gordon and Terry Thompson at the top of Orange’s batting order. Adam reached on a walk from Red’s newest mound phenom, Mike Mordecai. Terry Thompson ground into a force at 2B for the first out. Jack Adams lined a single to left to put runners on 1B and 2B. Bobby Miller slashed a hard single up the middle to drive in the first run of the game. Steve Kenig grounded one up the middle that was not handled by the defense, allowing Jack to cross the plate with the 2nd run. Jim Foelker ripped a hard liner to left center that skipped past the outfielders for a two-run triple. Bubba Barnett bounced back to the pitcher for the 2nd out. Barry McRee singled to score Jim with the 5th run to complete the 1st2nd – Paul Rubin walked to lead off the 2nd. He was erased on Jack Spellman’s ground out to short. Tom Kelm followed with a grounder to Gary and 3B that turned into another force at 2B. Adam fouled out to retire the side.

Red– Doc Hobar opened the bottom of the 1st with an arching fly over Steve’s head in left center. He easily reached 3B and either he or the 3B coach opted to keep him at the base. Unfortunately, the throw from the outfield was coming at the same time Doc was rounding 3B and he was tagged out trying to scramble back to the bag. Tough luck out for Red! Terry Watts lined a single to right to rub a little more salt in the wound. Patrick Schmidt lined out to Adam at short for the 2nd out. Ken Brown fouled out to end the scoreless 1st inning. 2nd – Mercenary Tom Kelm took over the pitching duties for Orange in this one and he was on from the start. He struck out Bobby Hawthorne leading off the 2nd. He then induced ground ball outs to 3B by Sal Lopez and Mike Mordecai to complete the two inning shutout.

End of 2nd Score: Orange 5 Red 0

Third Inning Recap:

Orange– Terry and Jack led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Bobby lined a base hit up the middle, but Terry was thrown out at the plate on a nice relay from Ken to Morris for the 1st out. Steven hit a flyball to center field that allowed Jack to score the 1st run. Jim smashed another line shot to left center for an RBI double. Bubba bounced back to Mike for the final out.

Red- finally broke through with a run in the 3rd. Morris Carter struck out to open the frame, and Butch Barber was retired when his drive down the right field line could not stay in fair territory. Mercenaries, Scott Wright and Gary Coyle delivered back-to-back singles to mount a late rally for the Red team. Doc slapped a single to left to drive in the 1st run. Terry flew out to Cf to end the frame.

End of 3rd Score: Orange 7 Red 1

 Fourth Inning Recap:

Orange– After Barry reached on a free pass, the next three batters (Paul, Jack and Tom) all hit into fielder’s choice groundouts to quickly end the scoreless 4th inning for Orange.

Red– Patrick and Ken opened the 4th with singles. Bobby grounded to 3B and Jack deftly tagged the runner coming from 2B for the 1st out. Sal ripped a single over 3B to drive in Ken with the 1st run. Mike grounded to 3B and Jack had a déjà vu moment as he tagged out the runner heading to the bag for the 2nd out. Morris was retired to close out the frame.

End of 4th Score: Orange 7 Red 2

Fifth Inning Recap

Orange-Adam grounded out to 3B to start the inning. Terry Thompson hit a flyball to deep right center and it looked like Terry Watts might be able to make a play on the ball. As he reached back for the ball, it caromed off his shoulder and allowed Terry T. to cruise into 3B with a triple. Jack blooped a single to shallow center to score Terry with Orange’s first run. Bobby flew out to Patrick in center for the 2nd out. Steven thought it looked like fun so he did the same, just a little higher and longer but same result as Patrick cradled the ball for the final out.

Red-P Tom Kelm made short work of the Red hitters as he only allowed a single in putting together another shutout inning. Butch led off with a groundout to 2B. Scott singled up the middle but was forced out at 2B on another nice defensive play by Jack Adams at 3B. Gary hit a sharp grounder, and Jack knocked it down and recovered to fire the ball to 2B from his knees for the out. Doc was retired on a comebacker to Tom to end the inning.

End of 5th Score: Orange 8 Red 2

Sixth Inning Recap:

Orange-Jim F. continued to rake at the plate although he did have lady luck on his side in this at bat. He skied the ball to left center, and it looked like an out, but Butch was unable to complete the catch and Jim ended up at 3B with his 2nd triple of the game. Bubba drilled a ball to right center for a run-scoring double. Barry was retired on a grounder to short. Paul singled up the middle but again, a strong throw from the outfield and a good relay from Ken resulted in an other out at the plate. Jack reached on a pop fly single to 2B and Tom drove in the 2nd run with a single to center. Adam ended the inning by grounding out to short.

Red- Red’s bats came alive in the 6th. Terry, Patrick and Ken all singled to load the bases with nobody out. Bobby stroked a single to left to drive in two runs for Red. Sal followed with another hit to left to drive in Ken with the 3rd run. Tom bounced back and retired the next three batters to keep Red at three runs for the frame.

End of 6th Score: Orange 10 Red 5

Seventh “Open” Inning Recap:

Orange- The Orangemen exploded for six runs in the buffet to grab an eleven-run lead and force a flip flop with two men on and two out. Terry and Jack started the frame with back-to-back singles. Bobby grounded to 1B and Sal made a nice throw to 2B for the force and the 1st out. Steve singled to left center to bring in Terry from 3B. Jim completed a perfect 4-4 day at the plate with an RBI single. Bubba and Barry also contributed run-scoring singles. Paul was retired on a grounder to short for the 2nd out. Jack followed with a perfectly placed ball down the right field line for a two run inside the park homer to force the flip flop.

Red- down by eleven, Red battled back to put up four runs in their half of the buffet. The big blow being a three-run homer by Ken Brown on another well-placed shot down the right field line. Alas it was too little too late and Red went down in defeat by a final score of 16-9.

Final Score: Orange 16 Red 9

Game 2 9:30 a.m. Blue (1-3-0) vs. Gray (3-1-0)

First & Second Inning Recap:

Blue-Don Roets sharp grounder to short scooted under Scott Wright’s glove for a leadoff single. Scott was able to handle Mike Hill’s grounder and turned a 6U 6-3 double play to quickly get two outs in the 1st. Raul DeLeon singled and Daniel Baladez drew a walk to get things started. Henry Flores was called out on strikes on an unhittable pitch from P Ray Pilgrim to retire the side. 2nd– Tommy DeLeon led off the 2nd with a ground single in the 5/6 hole as Tom Brownfield, in his pinch runner debut for the season easily reached first base safely. Jim Maloy fouled out and Donnie Janac grounded into a fielder’s choice for the first two outs. Dave Berra ended the inning by lining out to Bobby Miller at 2B.

Gray- P Tommy DeLeon retired leadoff batter, Scott Wrihght, on a hard grounder to 1B that Tom B. handled with ease. Mike Carroll singled to center, and Peter Atkins followed with a single to left center. Gary’s base hit loaded the bases with nobody out. Lynn Simpson led off with a “seeing eye” single up the middle. Phil Stanch lined a single to right center to keep things cooking. Margarito Canava grounded to Mike Hill at short and he flipped to 2B and Blue completed the 6-4-3 double play. Larry Coons came through with a clean single to center to drive in the first run of the game. Ken Brown followed with a hit and Jim Foelker drove in the 2nd run with sharp single to left center. Scott grounded back to the pitcher to end the frame.

End of 2nd Score: Gray 2 Blue 0

Third Inning Recap:

Jack Spellman keyed a two-out rally with a single to right. Don walked and Mike reached on an infield single to load the bases. Raul smacked a hard single up the middle to drive in two runs as Blue finally got on the scoreboard. Daniel bounced out to short to end the inning.

Gray- facing the heart of Gray’s lineup, P Tommy D. somehow managed to keep Gray off the scoreboard. Mike grounded out to short to start the frame. Peter hit a flyball to deep center, but Jim Maloy was well positioned and made the catch for the 2nd out. Gary sliced a ball to left center that eluded the outfielders for a standup triple. He was left stranded at 3B as Ray flew out to end the inning.

End of 3rd Score: Gray 2 Blue 2

Fourth Inning Recap:

Blue- Ray continued to silence Blue’s bats as he tossed another shutout inning in the 4th. Henry grounded out to 3B to start the inning.  Gray- unable to generate any offense as Gray went down in order in the 4th. Lynn flew out to right center to open the inning. Phil reached on a single up the middle. Margarito grounded to Mike and he flipped to his Keystone partner (can’t recall who was playing 2B for Blue?) who completed the 3rd double play of the game to retire the side.

End of 4th Score: Gray 2 Blue 2

Fifth Inning Recap:

Blue– Dave led off the inning with a line drive single to center. Johnny grounded out to short and Scott and Ken completed the 6-4-3 double play. Tom B. worked a walk from Ray and Jack S. got his 2nd consecutive hit to give Blue some life. Don grounded sharply to 3B but Gary made the play and stepped on the bag for the final out.

Gray– up until now, this game had been a closely fought pitcher’s duel but that all changed in the 5th. Gray finally broke through with a five-run outburst to take control of this one. Larry popped out to short to open the inning. Ken singled and scored on Jim’s third triple of the day. Scott reached on an infield hit as Jim was unable to score on the play. Tommy D. drove in the first run on a fielder’s choice out. Jim M. smacked a single to right to bring in the 2nd run. Donnie grounded out to 3B to end the threat.

Gray—continue to slug in the 6th as Gray out up five more runs to put this one out of reach. Gary led off with a single and scored on Ray’s double down the left field line. He scored on Lynn’s single to right.  Phil and Margarito had back-to-back singles to push across another run.
