Game Day Gazette
May 7, 2026
Chilly start to today’s games as temperatures hovered around sixty degrees with winds coming in from the north at 10-20 mph. Long sleeves, sweats and hoodies were the order of the day but play on we must and we did!
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
All games for Monday May 11th are cancelled due to a city-wide training day for the City of Austin resulting in the park being closed. Good news, the games have been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 12th at Krieg. We will be following the same schedule with games being played on Tuesday rather than Monday.
Game 1 8:30 a.m. Orange (2-1-0) vs. Green (1-2-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Orange– Terry Thompson led off the game with a bloop double to right field. Jack Adams single to left center brought Terry in with the game’s first run. Jim Foelker lined out to short for the first out. Adam Gordon bounced into a force out at 2B for the 2nd out and Steve Kendig did likewise to end the inning. 2nd – Barry McRee flew out to center on a nice running catch by Paul Rubin to open the 2nd inning. Bubba Barnett bounced back to pitcher Luis Sanchez for the 2nd out. Orange was playing short-handed for this one and ended up drawing five mercenaries out of the bucket as Scott Wright, Raul DeLeon, Ray Pilgrim, Jim Maloy and Jeff Broussard joined in the fun. Scott and Raul provided back-to-back singles to provide a spark, but Ray flew out to Tom Brownfield in right center to close out the scoreless 2nd inning.
Green– Jack Spellman rifled a single to right center to lead off the game for Green. Paul Rubin grounded weakly to short and Jack flipped to Scott for the force. Scott made a curious choice to go to 1B to try and complete the double play, but his throw was wis=de and Paul ended up on 3B. Luis Sanchez lifted a fly to right center that was deep enough to drive in the run to tie the ball game. Ken Mockler grounded out to 2B to retire the side. 2nd– Tom B. led off the 2nd with a base on balls. Denny laced a single to left center to move Tom’s pinch runner to 3B. Mickey Poole lifted a flyball to center that got past Barry for a two-run double. P Terry Thompson then retired the last three batters to limit the damage getting Dean Hector on a grounder to 2B, William Powell on a pop out to 3B and Larry King on a comebacker to the mound.
End of 2nd Score: Green 3 Orange 1
Third Inning Recap:
Orange– Jim Maloy led off the 2nd with a flyball to center. Yours truly overran the ball and it clanked off my glove. Fortunately, Tom B. was standing close by and picked up the loose ball. Unfortunately for Jim, he decided to try and stretch his single into a double and Tom’s strong throw to Jack beat him to the base for an out. Jeff Broussard followed with a line single to right center. Terry flew out to right center and Jack lined out to second to end the scoreless inning.
Green- took control of this one with a five-run outburst in the 3rd. Rip Wright walked to start the frame and Green’s lone mercenary, Gary Coyle, ripped a double to right center. Jack walked to load the bases. Paul grounded out to short, but a run scored on the play (productive out?). Luis followed with a single to bring in Gary with the 2nd run. Ken crushed a ball to deep center field for a double as both runners scored on the hit. Tom then put a bow on the five-run inning with another double to score Ken.
End of 3rd Score: Green 8 Orange 1
Fourth Inning Recap:
Orange– P Luis Sanchez continued his mastery on the mound as he retired Jim F. on a pop up to short and Adam on a pop to 3B (fine running catch by Gary). Steve lined a two-out single to left and moved to 3B on Barry’s single up the middle. Bubba hit a roller up the middle just out of Jack’s reach for an RBI single. With two on and two-out, Scott took a home run cut on the first pitch of his at bat but just missed resulting in an inning ending pop out to 1B.
Green– Denny Malloy led off the 4th with a booming double to left center. Mickey beat out an infield single as Denny advanced to 3B. Dean stroked a ball over Barry’s head in center field for a two-run triple. William reached on an infield single, but Dean opted not to try and score on the overthrow to 1B. Larry grounded to short and Jack flipped to Scott for the force at 2B. Dean, now deciding it would be a good time to run, took off for the plate but Scott’s throw home beat him to complete the 6-4-2 double play. Rip ended the inning with a pop fly out at 3B.
End of 4th Score: Green 10 Orange 2
Fifth Inning Recap:
Orange-did I mention how well Luis was pitching in this one. I should also mention, his fielding was impeccable as well. The first two batters (Raul and Ray) were retired on balls back to the mound. Jim M. and Jeff followed with back-to-back singles, but Luis got Scott on a comebacker to end the scoreless frame.
Green-the first three batters (Gary, Jack and Paul) all reached on singles to load the bases. Luis fouled out for the first out. Ken hit a deep fly to left center to bring in Gary from 3B. Tom B. followed with a booming double to right center to bring in two more runs. Denny singled and Mickey walked to load the bases. Dean lined out to 2B to end the frame.
End of 5th Score: Green 13 Orange 2
Sixth “Open” Inning Recap:
Orange-down by eleven runs, Orange was unable to muster much of a comeback in the buffet. Jack led off with a single but Jim F. and Adam each hit into fielder’s choice ground outs. Steven lined a two-out hit but Barry bounced into a force out at 2B to end the game.
Final Score: Green 13 Orange 2
Game 2 9:30 a.m. Red (1-2-0) vs. Blue (1-2-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Red-Doc Hobar grounded to short to start the late game. John Flowers was retired on a comebacker to P Tommy DeLeon for the 2nd out. Patrick Schmidt laced a single to center field for Red’s first hit. Ken Brown grounded sharply to SS Mike Hill who made a 6U put out at 2B to end the inning. 2nd– Terry Watts led off the 2nd with his textbook swing producing a single to right center. Bobby Hawthorne walked and Sal Lopez singled through the 5/6 hole to load the bases. Mike Mordecai grounded out to Tommy, and he threw to 2B for the force. The runner from 3B was able to score on the play. Jack Kelly looped a single to right center to drive in the 2nd run. Mercenary Peter Atkins hit a booming flyball to deep center that Donne Janac put away on the warning track (no we don’t have one so just pretend with me here!). Amazingly, two runners were able to score on the play (another very productive out!). Jack Adams lined a single to center to bring in the 5th run of the frame.
Blue- Morris Carter went deep into his bullpen and called on 3rd starter, Mike Mordecai, to take the bump for this one. Mike struggled to hit the mat in his pre-game warmups but quickly found his groove as the game progressed. Don Roets led off with a solid single up the middle. Mike Hill grounded one up the middle and Ken Brown scooped it up touched 2B and threw to 1B to completed the 6U 6-3 double play. Raul grounded sharply to 3B, but Jax made a clean grab and threw it 1B to finish off the scoreless 1st. 2nd– Henry Flores grounded out to 3B to lead off the 2nd. Alex Valles worked a walk but was forced out at 2B on Jim Maloy’s grounder to 2B. Tommy DeLeon lined a single to right center. Chris Hurst walked the 2nd walk of the inning as Mike struggled with his control. Donnie Janac delivered the big blow as he laced a two-run single up the middle to get Blue on the board. Lucky Hoffman ended the inning by lining out to 3B.
End of 2nd Score: Red 5 Blue 2
Third Inning Recap:
Red- Doc led oof the 3rd with a double to center. John fouled out and Patrick grounded back to the pitcher, and it looked like Tommy would be able to get out of this inning. The next batter, Ken Brown, changed all that with a flyball down the right field line that Ken turned into an inside the park two-run homer. Terry and Bobby followed with back-to-back singles, but Sal swung through a short ball from Tommy to end the inning.
Blue- Dave Berra lined one back through the box but Mike was able to spear it for the 1st out. Daniel Baladez smoked a ball deep to CF for a double. Don reached on an infield hit but was erased on another 6U 6-3 double play turned by Ken.
End of 3rd Score: Red 7 Blue 2
Fourth Inning Recap:
Red- extended their lead with another five-run outburst. Mike M. opened with a single and moved to 3B on Butch’s double to right center. Jack K. reached on an infield single as Mike scored the 1st run. Peter launched a double to left center to clear the bases as two more runs came across. Jack A. drilled a single to left center to score Peter with the 4th run. Doc was retired on a fielder’s choice for the 1st out of the frame. John came through as he lined a single to left to drive in the 5th run.
Blue- Raul opened the 4th with a single. Henry fouled out but Alex and Jim M. followed with back-to-back singles to produce the 1st run. Mike was able to get Tommy and Chris to ground into fielder’s choice outs to end the inning.
End of 4th Score: Red 12 Blue 3
Fifth Inning Recap:
Red– continued to pound the ball as Patrick provided a leadoff triple on a well struck ball to left center. Ken lined out to 3B for the 1st out. Terry’s deep fly to right center split the fielder’s in resulted in the 2nd three-bagger in the frame. He scored on Bobby’s sacrifice fly to left. Sal and Mike followed with back-to-back singles. Butch then singled to right center to drive in the 3rd run in the inning. Jack K. went down looking to end the frame.
Blue– Mike quickly shut down the men in Blue in the bottom half. Donnie reached on a leadoff single but was erased on Red’s 3rd double play of the game. This was a routine 6-4-3 twin killing off Lucky’s bat. Dave flew out to center to retire the side. As Blue trailed by twelve, the teams flip flopped and Blue remained at the plate for their buffet inning.
End of 4th Score: Red 15 Blue 3
Sixth “Open” Inning Recap:
Blue– Daniel Baladez, showing surprising power at the plate today, launched a moonball over Peter’s head in deep center for a leadoff triple. Don fouled out for the 1st, but Mike lined a clean single to right to score Daniel with the 1st run. Raul flew out to center for the 2nd out. Henry drew a walk but Doc made a great leaping catch on Alex’s liner to right to end the game and give Red their 2nd victory of the session and the season!

Gray in a familiar position atop the leader board but three teams (Orange, Red and Green) are only a game behind. Competitive balance at its best!
