The first day in our new home on K6 did not go without a few hiccups. PARD did not have time to adjust the distance between bases to 65 ft. as we had at K2, so they were going to leave them at 70 ft. When we arrived at the field, we were surprised to see that they were set at 60 ft. Faced with a choice of a bevy of infield hits vs. an uptick in potential double plays, we reached out to PARD and had them move the lines back to 70 ft. All of this resulted in a delay in our start time for the day. A few other issues were noted and have been addressed with PARD including no lights or running water in the Men’s bathroom, no 180 ft. line drawn in the outfield and a particularly hard infield that resulted in several crazy hops. Hopefully these will all be taken care of before we return on Thursday.

First & Second Inning Recap:

 

Blue- returning the thump in their lineup with Tim Coles, Raul DeLeon and Don Roets back on the field, Blue proceeded to score nine out of a possible ten runs in the first two inning frame to jump out to a big lead. A special treat for the fans, all world athlete, Ken Brown, always looking for a new challenge was tabbed by manager Morris Carter as the starting pitcher for the Red team. To my knowledge, this was Ken’s first time on the mound, and it showed as he struggled with his control in the 1st inning walking Tommy DeLeon and Mike Hill to start the game. Once Ken found the strike zone, he was rudely greeted by back-to-back singles by Tim Coles and Raul DeLeon as the first run crossed the plate. Donnie Janac bounced into a fielder’s choice to record the 1st out in Ken’s time on the bump as Mike scored the 2nd run. Daniel Baladez singled to load the bases before Ken got the 2nd out as Alex Valles grounded into a fielder’s choice. That would be the last out in the frame as Dave Berra and Don Roets both singled to bring in the 4th run. Lucky Hoffman finished off Ken’s auspicious debut as he ripped an RBI single to left center to complete the five-run inning.    2nd – things started much better in the 2nd as Ken retired Johnny Neville on a third-strike foul and Jim Foelker on a ground out to short. The top of the lineup then cranked things up with six consecutive hits. Tommy and Mike singled and Tim blasted one it right center for a three-run home run (1st at the new field). Raul and Donnie followed with back-to-back hits, Daniel drove in the 4th run with a single to left before Alex flew out to CF to retire the side.

 

Red– only had five regulars available for this one as Morris had to dig deep into the mercenary pool to fill out his lineup. Bobby Hawthorne ascended to the leadoff spot and went down on strikes to open the inning. Terry Watts looped a single to right center but was erased on Patrick Schmidt’s fielder’s choice groundout. Ken Brown took a called 3rd strike on a well-placed pitch from Tommy DeLeon to close out the frame. 2nd– Morris Carter led off the 2nd with an infield single helped by Ken’s sprint from the plate. Paul Rubin lined a double to left to get both runners in scoring position. Gary Coyle smacked a single to left center to drive in one run. Morris, coaching 3B and not considering the longer distance between bases, opted to send me home and I was out at the plate for the 1st out. Jeff Broussard lined a single up the middle and Louise Caputo followed with a single to bring in the 2nd run. Dave Berra bounced into a fielder’s choice for the 2nd out before Barry grounded out to 3B to end the inning.

3rd Inning Recap:

 

Blue- P Ken Brown settled into this new role as he hurled a scoreless 3rd inning to keep Blue from running away with this one. Dave greeted him with a single to lead off the inning. Don bounced into a fielder’s choice with Paul making the play from short. Lucky grounded one to3B and Gary got the force at 2B for the 2nd out. Johnny rolled one up the middle and Paul was able to corral it and step on 2B to retire the side.  

 

Red– unable to capitalize on Ken’s pitching success as Tommy held them scoreless in the 3rd. The inning started on a positive note as Bobby and Terry led off with back-to-back singles. Patrick grounded sharply to 3B, and Tim was able to turn a 5U 5-4 double play to short circuit the rally. The longer distance between bases (70 ft. vs. 65 ft.) greatly increased the number of double plays that we would see throughout the day. Ken laced a single to right center, but Morris lined out to short to end the inning.

Fourth Inning Recap:

 

Blue– Jim led off the inning with a single. Tommy popped out to short for the 1st out. Back-to-back singles by Mike and Tim plated the 1st run. Ken regrouped and got Raul and Donnie to hit into fielder choice outs to close out the inning.

 

Red– finally showed some life at the plate as Red erupted for four runs to get back in this one, Paul slammed a triple to left center leading off the frame. Gary doubled to left to bring in the 1st run. Jeff stroked a run scoring single to center to bring Gary around with the 2nd run. Louie followed with a double to left to drive in the 3rd run. Back-to-back singles by Dave and Barry brought in the 4th run. P Tommy D. got Bobby to ground into a double play and retired Terry on a fielder’s choice to avoid any further damage.

 

End of 4th Score: Blue 10 Red 6

 

Fifth Inning Recap:

 

Blue– looking comfortable in his new role, Ken had his 2nd shutout inning to keep Red within striking distance. Daniel grounded out to short to start the frame and Alex went down on strikes for the 2nd out. Dave picked up his 3rd hit in as many at bats and Don walked to put Blue in a position to score. Lucky hit a flyball to center but Patrick had a good jump and made a nice running catch to retire the side.

 

Red- exploded for five runs to take the lead for the first time in this contest! Patrick and Ken opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Morris struck out and Paul bounced into a fielder’s choice and things looked bleak for Red. The next six batters reached base to put Red on top. Gary, Jeff and Louie all singled to complete their respective perfect days at the plate to push across two runs. Dave and Barry followed with back-to-back run scoring singles to bring in the 3rd and 4th runs. Bobby wrapped things up with an RBI single to drive in the 5th run.

 Sixth “Open” Inning Recap:

 

Blue– trailing for the 1st time in the game, Blue rallied back with three runs to take the lead. Johnny opened the buffet inning with a walk. Jim lined out to short for the 1st out. Tommy singled but Mike was retired for the 1st time in the game as he grounded out to 2B as the 1st run score to tie the game. Tim hit a hard two-hopper to short, and I gloved the ball after a slight bobble but hurried the throw to 1B and pulled Louie off the bag as Blue took the lead.  Raul smacked a single to bring in the 3rd run before Donnie went down swinging to end the frame.

 

Red– down by two, Red had a chance to steal this one. Terry ground out to 3B to open the inning. Patrick and Ken followed with back-to-back singles. Morris went down swinging and Red was down to their final out. Wanting to make up for my fielding snafu in the top half of the buffet, Paul grounded one up the middle that caromed off 2B to bring in Patrick for the 1st run. As the throw from the outfield went to 3B, I was able to cruise into 2B to put runners in scoring position with two men out. Gary came through with his 4th hit of a perfect day at the plate as he looped one into left center field for a walk off win for Red. Not to give too much credit to the mercenaries but as a group (6 players) they batted .850 going 17-20 and accounted for ten runs scored and 13 runs batted in! Big story, Ken Brown gets the win in his rookie debut and the crowd goes wild. Congrats Ken!

First & Second Inning Recap:

Green– with only six regulars in the lineup, Green had to pick up five mercenaries to fill their lineup in this one. Paul Rubin led off the game with a single up the middle and moved to 3B on Luis’ hard single to right. Denny Malloy reached on an infield single as I scampered home from 3B for the 1st run of the game. Mickey Poole’s single loaded the bases with nobody out. Robby Vickery tried to go to right, but the ball drifted into foul territory for the 1st out. Tom Kelm delivered the big blow as he lined a two-run single to center to put Green up by three. Ken Brown grounded into a fielder’s choice for the 2nd out. Patrick Schmidt lined a single down the 3B line to drive in the 4th run before grounding out to short to retire the side. 2nd– Lucky Hoffman and Gary Coyle opened the 2nd with back-to-back singles. Paul hit into a fielder’s choice at 3B for the 1st out. Luis’ single brought in the 1st run. Denny followed with a single to right center to push across the 2nd run. Mickey’s fly ball to left center was deep enough to get the run home form 3B, before Patrick hit into a fielder’s choice to end the frame.

 

Orange- missing Jack Adams and Bobby Miller for this one, Orange hit paydirt in the draw as Tim Coles, Raul DeLeon, Scott Wright and Jeff Broussard were inserted in the lineup for today’s game. Adam Gordon hit a sizzler to 3B that got past Robby for a leadoff double. Jim Foelker reached on an infield hit to move Adam to 3B. Terry Thompson flew out to shallow left center for the 1st out. Steve Kendig hit one a little deeper to right center allowing Adam to score the 1st run for Orange. Barry McRee’s single was followed by Jerry Mylius’ double as Jim came across with the 2nd run. Bubba Barnett hit into a fielder’s choice to end the frame. 2nd– On to the mercenaries in the 2nd. Scott Wright ripped a single to right and scored on Tim Cole’s double to right center. Raul DeLeon flew out to right center for the 1st out. Jeff singled but was forced out at 2B on Adam’s grounder to short with Tim scoring on the play. Jim bounced into a fielder’s choice to close out the inning with Green up by three runs.

Third Inning Recap:

 

Green- P Terry Thompson retired the first two batters getting Ken to fly out to right and Patrick to ground out to 3B. Green mounted a two-out rally with Daniel’s single to right center leading the way. Ken stepped in to run for him and scored as Lucky’s drive to left center split the fielder’s and rolled towards the fence for an RBI double. Gary grounded out to 3B to end the frame.

Orange- P Luis shut down the Red batters in the 3rd, holding them to no runs on two hits. Terry hit a drive to left center that I was able to back pedal and grab for the 1st out. Steve singled but was forced out on Barry’s grounder to 3B for the 2nd out. Jerry singled but was forced out at 2B on Bubba’s grounder to Tom K. to retire the side.

End of 3rd Score: Green 8 Orange 4

 

Fourth Inning Recap:

Green- busted out with four big runs in the 4th to claim an eight-run lead. Paul reached on an infield single to open the frame. Luis and Denny followed with back-to-back hits to bring in the 1st run; Mickey lined a perfectly placed hit to right to drive in both runners. Robby’s single moved Mickey to 2B. Tom popped out to 2B for the 1st out. Ken’s single loaded the bases and Patrick followed with a run scoring single to up the count to four runs in the frame. Daniel flew out to left center to end the inning

Orange- now trailing by eight, Orange began clawing their way back to overcome the sizeable lead. Scott and Tim opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Raul fouled out for the 1st out but Jeff lined a single to right center to drive in the 1st run. Adam grounded into a fielder’s choice as Tim was able to score on the play. Jim singled to extend the inning but Terry flew out to left center for the 3rd time in the ball game to end the inning.

 

End of 4th Score: Green 12 Orange 6

 

Fifth “Open” Inning Recap:

Green- looking to extend their lead, Green failed to score in the buffet, potentially leaving the door open for an Orange comeback. Lucky ground out to short to start the buffet. Gary singled but was forced out at 2B on Paul weak grounder to Tim Coles at 3B. Luis completed a perfect 4-4 day at the plate with another single to right, but Denny popped out to short to retire the side.

Green- down by six runs, Orange had a chance to steal this one, but it was not meant to be. Steve grounded out to 2B for the 1st out. Barry and Jerry followed with back-to-back singles. Bubba hit into a fielder’s choice with Ken going to 3B for the force. Scott singled to load the bases and Tim drilled one past the shortstop for a two-run single. Raul flew out to right to end the game as Orange came up just short in a 12-8 final.

Green bounced back with a win over Orange to regain a two-game lead in the session standings.

Green extended their lead over the idle Gray squad to 1.50 games while pushing their lead over Orange to 3.50 games. Don’t look now but Red has closed to within a game of Blue with Monday’s dramatic come-from behind win.

Can Blue hold off Red in their fight to stay out of the cellar, a win over Gray would go a long way down that road? Will Gray come back rested and ready to play as they try to close the gap with the idle Greenies?

Orange will be taking on the umpiring responsibilities in this game

 

Game 2 9:00 a.m. Orange (5-4-0) vs. Red (4-5-0)

Can Orange bounce back after Monday’s loss to Green and is Red finally going to overtake Blue and climb out of last place in the season long standings? Something tells me that the mercenaries are going to play a big role in the outcome of this one.

All will be revealed on Thursday!

Blue will be taking umpiring the late game on Thursday.

Green will have a bye on Thursday allowing their players to have priority in the draw.
