Game Day Gazette
October 19, 2026
Despite the return of most of the tournament players that were out last week, still had to draw seven players in the first game and six in the late game. We experienced some issues with the sprinkler system on K2 which pushed us back on to K6 for today’s ballgames. Waiting on word from PARD whether the repairs will be made in time to allow us to get back to K2 for Thursday’s action. Beautiful fall day with temperatures at game time in the upper 50’s warming up to the low 10’s by the end of the morning.

First & Second Inning Recap:
Strange game as all the runs for both teams were scored in the first two frames and the game ended at 9:17 a.m. after five seemingly short innings.
Red- Doc Hobar led off the game with a single but was forced out at 2B on John Flowers grounder to Raul DeLeon at 2B. Patrick Schmidt singled to right and Ken Brown ripped a double to right center to drive in the first run of the game. Bobby Hawthorne slapped a single down the left field line to bring in Patrick with the 2nd run. Mike Mordecai grounded a single to left to drive in Ken with the 3rd run but he was thrown out trying to advance to 2B for the 2nd out. Gene Nelson lined a base hit to right to drive in Bobby with the 4th run. Morris Carter reached on an infield single that somehow evaded Jack Spellman’s glove to put runners on 1B and 2B with two outs. Jack Adams rapped a single to left center and Paul Rubin quickly pounced on the ball and relayed to Jack. C Dave Berra made a great catch on Jack’s one-hop throw to the plate to nail Gene at the dish for the final out. 2nd – hard to fathom but Red would not score again for the rest of the contest. Barry McRee opened the 2nd with a line single to left. Lucky Hoffman fouled out for the 1st out. Doc hit a sizzling line drive up the middle, but Raul was moving to his right with the crack of the bat and speared the ball for the 2nd out. John popped out to short to retire the side.
Gray- starting pitcher Mike Mordecai could not find the strike zone and manager Morris Carter pulled him after he issued walks to Paul Rubin and Jack Spellman. New pitcher Jack Adams struggled to find his groove and walked Denny Malloy to load the bases. Mickey Poole saw a pitch he liked and drove it to left for a two-run double to put Green on the board. William Powell bounced out the pitcher for the 1st out. Tom Kelm stroked a single to left center to drive in Mickey with the 3rd run. Larry King followed with a a ground single to plate Mickey with the 4th run. Raul DeLeon wrapped up the five-run 1st with a hard single up the middle to score Tom’s courtesy runner. 2nd– P Jack Adams was throwing a lot of seemingly flat pitches but umpire Tommy DeLeon was giving him a lot of latitude as the Green hitters attempted to adapt to Jack’s delivery. Terry Tompson walked to open the 2nd. Steve Kendig fouled out for the 1st out. Dave Berra squared up Jack’s first pitch and drove it up the middle for a run-scoring triple. Paul drilled a single past the pitcher to plate Dave with the 2nd run. Jack S. sliced a single to right to keep things rolling. Denny took a called 3rd strike for the 2nd out. Mickey continued to swing a hit bat as his single to left scored Paul with Green’s 3rd run. William followed with a screaming double to left driving in the 4th run. Tom finished up the frame with a well struck ball to left center to drive home Mickey with the 5th run. Again, who would have guessed that these would be the final runs to be scored in this game.
End of 2nd Score: Green 10 Red 4
3rd Inning Recap:
Red- P Tom Kelm silenced the Red batters in a shut out 3rd frame. Patrick grounded to 1B and Larry made a nice stop and easily beat Patrick to the bag for the 1st out. Ken bounced one back to Tom and he made the throw to 1B for the 2nd out. Bobby worked a walk but was forced out at 2B on Mike’s comebacker to Tom for the final out.
Gray– Larry singled to start the 3rd but was forced out (6) on Raul’s ground ball to short. Terry singled to put runners on 1B and 2B, but Jack got Steve to bounce into a 6U 6-3 double play to end the scoreless 3rd inning.
End of 3rd Score: Green 10 Red 4
Fourth Inning Recap:
Red– Gene lined a single to right to lead off the 4th. He was forced out a t 2B on Morris’s grounder to short. Jack A. singled to put two runners on, but Jack turned an unassisted double play on Barry’s grounder to short to retire the side. Curious play as Jack fielded the ball, tagged Ken and then the base to complete the heads-up twin killing!
Gray– Dave walked to open the 4th and Paul walked as well. However, I opted to stay at eh plate and proceeded to ground into a fielder’s choice at 2B for the 1st out. Jack followed suit with a grounder to 2B for the 2nd out. Denny was retired for the 3rd out as Gray falied to score in back-to-back innings.
End of 4th Score: Green 10 Red 4
Fifth “Open” Inning Recap:
Red– the “open inning” call seemed to come prematurely given that is was only 9:15 a.m. but we played on. Lucky lined out to short as Jack went down to make a fine catch to start the buffet. Doc flew out to CF and there were quickly two outs. John drew a base on balls and Patick reached on a ground single down the 3B line, However, P Tom K. retired Ken on a fielder’s choice ground out to short to close out the game. Fourth Inning Recap:
Blue– scratched out a run as the Orange infielders decided to throw the ball around the field in this frame. Alex hit a hard liner to center but I had him played well and was able to secure the catch for the 1st out. Dave popped out to 3B for the 2nd out. Chris kept the inning alive with a single. Johnny grounded to short and the throw to 1B went wide allowing the runner from 1B to score and Johnny’s courtesy runner to ease into 3B with a “triple”. Lucky stepped up and Orange employed the triangle defense in the outfield with me in front and Patrick and Steve playing a little deeper. Lucky popped one to left that I was able to make a leaping catch on to retire the side.
Orange- Paul walked to start the frame but was erased on Patrick’s fielder’s choice groundout to 2B. Gene’s single put runners on the corners. Patrick scored on Jack’s groundout to short before Terry fouled out to retire the side.

Fifth Inning Recap:
Blue– Ken led off with a single, but he was erased as Tommy bounced into a 4-6-3 double play. Mike lined out to short to finish off a very quick scoreless 5th inning.
Orange- after getting two quick outs, Adam drew a walk. He moved to 3B on Jerry’s single to right and scored on Jack’s single to right center. Scott followed with a drive to right that hung up just long enough for Alex to snare the ball for the final out.
End of 5th Score: Orange 13 Blue 9
Sixth “Open” Inning Recap:
Blue– Donnie opened the buffet with a line shot to center that hit right to me for the 1st out. Raul, Don and Daniel all singled to load the bases with two out and it looked like there might be a chance for Blue to get back in this one. Unfortunately, Alex bounced into a double play to close out the game and give Orange their first win of the session.
Final Score: Orange 13 Blue 9
