Game Day Gazette
August 3, 2026
Quick update on last Thursday’s game results between Green and Gray. After reviewing the situation, the board has decided that the results from the field, a 16-16 tie, will stand. Under C division rules no protests are allowed and this attempt to correct an error in scoring clearly falls under the category of a protest. I want to thank my fellow board members, both team managers and umpire Bruce Barnett for their input.
We are clearly entering into the dog days of summer with game time temperatures over ninety degrees and very little breeze. Keep hydrating and applying the sun screen and we’ll get through this.

First & Second Inning Recap:
Green-not showing any ill effects from their disappointing tie in last Thursday’s game with Gray, the Greenies came out firing on all cylinders in this one Quick thanks to Johnny Neville for keeping the scorebook in this game so I could focus on the game. Paul Rubin led off the game with a sharp single through the 5/6 hole. Jack Spellman followed with a line single to right as Paul advanced to 3B. Luis Sanchez rocketed a double to left to drive in one run. For the 2nd consecutive game, Green’s 3B bases (Larry King today) gave Jack a green light to go and he was gunned down at the plate for the 1st out. Denny Malloy laced a double to left center to put runners on 2B and 3B. Mickey Poole flew out to center for the 2nd out. Tom Kelm singled to right center to drive in the 2nd run. William Powell lined a hard shot to left to plate Denny with the 3rd run before Robby Vickery flew out to center to close out the inning. 2nd – Larry King hit a sizzling grounder past the 3B for a leadoff single. Mercenary Tim Coles followed with a drive to left center for a double. Tommy DeLeon stroked a single through the 5/6 hole to bring in the 1st run. Paul bounced one up the middle that deflected off Jack Kelly’s glove for an infield single. Jack blooped a single to center to drive in another run. Luis smoked a liner to right for a bases clearing double as all three runners scored to complete Green’s five-run inning.
Red– Doc Hobar opened the game with a line single to right center. Patrick Schmidt drilled a ball to right for a double. Doc was off with the hit and attempted to score from 1B but was thrown out at the plate on a nice throw from Tim Coles to Tommy D. for the first out. Gene Nelson flew out to William in right for the 2nd out. Ken Brown fouled out to retire the side in the scoreless 1st. 2nd– Terry Watts led off the 2nd with a groundout to short. Mike Mordecai and Bobby Hawthorne followed with back-to-back singles. Sal Lopez bounced into a fielder’s choice with the force at 3B. Jack Kelly grounded to Larry King at 1B and his throw to 2B beat the runner for the inning ending force out.
End of 2nd Score: Green 8 Red 0
3rd Inning Recap:
Green– despite sending seven batters to the plate, Green only managed to add a single run to their total. Denny blasted a triple to right center leading off the inning. Mickey slapped a single to drive in the 1st run. Tom singled to right center before William bounced into a fielder’s choice out at 3B. Robby confounded the scouting report with a bloop single to left to load the bases with only one out. Larry lined out to 3B bringing up Tim with a huge RBI opportunity. He took the first two pitches but fouled off the next two to end the inning.
Red– International; traveler, Jeff Broussard, back from his six-week sojourn in jolly old England knocked a single through the 5/6 hole to open the frame. Lucky Hoffman grounded to 3B and Robby made the throw to Tim who completed the 5-4-3 double play to thwart Red’s rally. Doc launched a double to right, but P Luis Sanchez got Patrick to ground out to 2B to retire the side.
End of 3rd Score: Green 9 Red 0
Fourth Inning Recap:
Green- professional hitter, Tommy D., bounced one through the 5/6 hole for a leadoff single. Paul grounded one to deep short and Ken got to the ball but his hurried throw to 2B was wide and rolled to the right field fence. Not sure what was happening behind the play as both William and I were running at full speed, but it took Lucky some time to get to the ball. In true Little League or in this cases “Bad News Bears” fashion, I was able to circle the bases for a two-run inside the park “homer”. Jack and Luis followed with back-to-back singles as Green threatened to blow this one wide open. Denny singled to drive in Jack with the 3rd run. The top four hitters in Green’s lineup went 12-12 for the game, scoring ten runs and driving in seven. Mickey’s single loaded the bases and Tom’s sacrifice fly to left center brought in the 4th run. William continued his clutch hitting as he delivered a single over 3B to bring in the 5th run.
Red– P Luis Sanchez continued to deal as he twirled his 4th consecutive shutout inning in the 4th. Gene led off with a looping single to right. Ken grounded sharply to short and Jack got the force at 2B for the 1st out. Terry worked a walk to put runners on 1B and 2B. Mike hit a humpback liner to 2B, and Tim hustled to make the catch. Ken, thinking the ball was going to drop, headed to 3B and was doubled off to end the inning.
End of 4th Score: Green 14 Red 0
Fifth “Open” Inning Recap:
Down by fourteen, the teams flip flopped and Red came up in their open inning.
Red-with the outcome pretty much secure, the only question was could Luis pick up the 3rd shutout of the year. Bobby picked up his 2nd hit with a looping single to left to start the buffet. Sal hit a two-strike pitch just outside of the 3B line for the 1st out. Jack hit a sharp grounder to 1B, and Larry pinned the ball against his body before he gained control and beat Ken in a footrace to the bag. Jeff followed with a routine grounder to short for the final out as Luis joined in the company of immortals like Ray Pilgrim, Tommy DeLeon and Terry Thompson with his first ASSL C division shutout!
Final Score: Green 14 Red 0

First & Second Inning Recap:
Gray- old fashioned slugfest in today’s late game as the two teams combined for thirty-seven runs on fifty-six hits. Scott Wright ripped a single to right to kick off the 2nd game. Mike Carroll singled and Gray was off and running. Gary Coyle bounced into a fielder’s choice for the 1st out. Ray Pilgrim smacked a shot up the middle to drive in the 1st run. Lynn Simpson also singled up the middle to drive in Mike with the 2nd run. Jeff Broussard lined out to short for the 2nd out. Margarito Canava reached on an infield hit to load the bases, but P Terry Thompson got David Safely to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the inning. 2nd– Mercenary Tom Kelm led off the 2nd with a booming drive down the left field line for a leadoff triple. Tim Coles lined an RBI single to right center to start the scoring in the 2nd. Daniel Baladez hit a sizzling grounder to 2B that Jerry Mylius was able to glove and flip to 2B to get the force for the 1st out. Scott absolutely clobbered a ball to right center for a two-run homer. Mike ground out to 2B for the 2nd out. Gary singled up the middle and Ray lined a double to left and it looked like Gray was poised for a five-run inning. Lynn walked to load the bases but again Terry was able to get Jeff to bounce out to 2B to stem the threat.
Orange- With Bobby Miller and Steven Kendig out of the lineup, would Orange be able to keep pace with the slugging Gray team. The simple answer is a resounding yes as Orange put up ten runs on seventeen hits to grab an early lead. Terry Thompson opened the Orange half inning with a booming drive to left center for a leadoff triple. Jack Adam’s single trough the 5/6 hole brought in the first run. Jim Foelker flew out to center for the 1st out. Barry McRee doubled as the throw from 3B was up the line allowing him to take an extra base. Adam Gordon smacked a base hit through the 5/6 hole to drive in the 2nd run. Jerry Mylius followed with an RBI single to left. Greg Tolander popped out to 3B for the 2nd out. Bubba Barnett’s walk loaded the bases and Rick Parker, returning from a lengthy layoff, singled to right center to score two more runs and complete the five-run inning. 2nd– Luther Elmore singled through the 5/6 hole to start the inning. Donnie Janac, Orange’s lone mercenary, singled to right. Terry popped out to short for the 1st out. Jack continued to rake at the late with a two-run double to left. Jim smacked a single through the 5/6 hole to bring in Jack with the 3rd run. Barry continued to have good luck as Jeff could not find the handle on Scott’s flip to 2B so all runners were safe. Adam reached on an infield single to load the bases. Jerry lined a two-out single down the right field line to drive in two runs and put Orange up by a 10-6 margin.
End of 2nd Score: Orange 10 Gray 6
Third Inning Recap:
Gray- fought back to take the lead with a five-run outburst in the 3rd. David started a one-out rally with a pop fly single to right. Tom K. lined a single to center before Tim skied a double to deep left center to bring David around to score. Daniel crushed a ball that went over Donnie’s head for a three run inside the park homerun. Scott was retired on a pop to short for the 2nd out. Mike singled and Gary walked ahead of Ray’s “Texas Leaguer” to left that brought in the 5th run.
Orange- trailing by one, Orange failed to mount any offense and P Ray Pilgrim held them without a run in the inning. Greg singled to start the inning but was erased on Bubba’s grounder to 2B. Rick popped out to short and Luther ground into a fielder’s choice to put a quick end to the inning.
End of 3rd Score: Gray 11 Orange 10
Fourth Inning Recap:
Gray- showing no quit, Gray put up another five-spot to extend their lead to six runs. Lynn walked but Jeff popped out to 2B for the 1st out. Margarito reached as his flyball to left was dropped. David was retired for the 2nd out and it looked like Terry might be able to get out of the inning unscathed. Not so soon my friend.. Tom smacked his 3rd hit of the game to drive in the 1st run. Tim hit a towering fly to left center that went to the fence for what appeared to be a two-run triple. However, the throw to the plate got away allowing Tim to score from 3B to complete the home run trot. Daniel followed with a bomb down the right field line for a triple. Scott hit a blooper to right that fell in as Daniel crossed the plate with the 5th run.
Orange- down by six, Orange managed to keep pace with Gray with a five-run inning of their own. Donnie opened the inning with a pop fly single to the right side. Terry ripped a single to left. Jack fouled out for the 1st out. Jim lined an RBI single to center to get Orange on the scoreboard. Barry was retired on a flyball to shallow left center on a fine defensive play by Scott Wright. Adam laced a double to left to knock in the 2nd run. Jerry came through with the big hit of the frame with a ringing triple down the 1B line to bring in two more runs. Greg finished off the five-run inning with a clean single down the 3B line.
End of 4th Score: Gray 16 Orange 15
Fifth “Open” Inning Recap:
Gray– looking to add to their slim one run lead, Gray pushed across a couple of runs to extend their lead to three runs. Mike and Gary opened the buffet with back-to-back singles. Ray hit a flyball to left center that was caught by Donnie but deep enough to advance the runner from 2B. Lynn singled in the runner from 3B for Gray’s first run. Jeff lined a single to center to score Gary with the 2nd run. Terry got out of the inning by getting Margarito to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.
Orange– chasing three, Orange benefitted from some shaky fielding by Gray to mount a comeback. Bubba singled to lead off the inning before Rick was retired for the 1st out. Luther and Donnie followed with back-to-back hits to load the bases. Terry and Jack hit flyball to center that looked to be catchable but both fell in for hits as Orange closed the lead to a single run. Jim smacked the ball through the 5/6 hole to score Donnie and Terry to complete the comeback and keep Orange in first place for the session
Final Score: Orange 19 Gray 18

Next Games: Thursday August 6, 2026
Game 1 8:00 a.m. Blue (5-6-0) vs. Orange (6-4-0)
Will Blue return from their bye refreshed and ready to get back in the race or will Orange continue to dominate at the plate and further distance themselves for the competition?
Green has umpiring duties for this one.
Game 2 9:00 a.m. Green (4-5-1) vs. Red (5-5-0)
Revenge will be foremost on the minds of the Red team as they want to prove Monday’s whitewashing was a fluke. Green is looking to even their record for the session and further cut into the lead of the idle Gray squad.
Blue will be taking on the umpire responsibilities in this game.
Gray will have a bye on Thursday so there players will have priority in the draw.
