Things pretty much returned to normal with no out-of-town tournaments to deplete the roster of players available for today’s games. Congratulations to the Relentless 75’s who finished 2nd in their age group (75AAA) in the recent SPA tournament in Waxahachie. Three of our C Division warriors were named as All American players for the tournament (Patrick Schmidt, Gary Coyle and Tommy DeLeon).
Welcome to our newest player, Louis Caputo, who has been playing in the Sunday night league and joined us this morning. Louis immediately made his presence known with a walk-off single in the first game, so we are expecting great things from “the new guy”.

First & Second Inning Recap:
Red- I overhead manager Morris Carter state he would put money on this lineup to win based on the favorable draw (at least on paper) but you never know how things are going to play out. Doc Hobar led off with a clean single but was forced out at 2B on Patrick Schmidt’s grounder to 2B. As an aside, Gray’s middle infield of Scott Wright and Tim Coles was stellar throughout the game. Bobby Hawthorne took a called 3rd strike on an unhittable pitch delivered by P Tom Kelm for the 2nd out. Ken Brown bounced out to 2B to close out the scoreless 1st inning. 2nd – Terry Watts opened the 2nd inning with a line single to center. Gene Nelson fouled out for the 1st out, Jack Kelly squibbed a ball to 2B, and Scott was able to get the force at 2B for the 2nd out. Jack Spellman lined a double to right to bring in Ken with Red’s 1st run. Paul Rubin fouled out to put an end to the inning.
Gray– With a couple of big bats out of the lineup (Peter Atkins and Gary Coyle) Gray still managed to put up five runs in the 1st to grab an early lead. Scott Wright and Mike Carroll opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Lynn Simpson fouled out for the 1st out. Ray Pilgrim stroked a sinking liner to center that hit and bounced out of Paul’s glove for a single to load the bases. Larry Coons fouled out and it looked like P Jack Kelly might get out of this without any damage. David Safely smacked an RBI single to right center to drive in the 1st run. The newest member of our league, Louie Caputo, grounded a single to left to drive in two more runs. Tim Coles followed with a bases clearing blast down the right field line to bring in two more runs. 2nd– The mercenaries continued to carry the load in the 2nd as Barry McRee and Tom Kelm led off with back-to-to back singles. Lucky Hoffman rocketed a ball over Patrick’s head in left center for a triple to bring in two runs for Gray. Scott bounced out to short and Lucky attempted to score from 3B on the play but Jack Adams’ strong throw to the plate beat him for the 6-3-2 double play. Mike bounced out for the final out.

3rd Inning Recap:
Red– promising start to the inning Jack Adams led off with a double and Terry Thompson walked. Doc hit a flyball to medium center field for the 1st out. Jack tagged up and tried to advance to 3B but the relay from Lynn to Tim to Ray at 3B beat him for the 2nd out. Patrick showing remarkable discipline at the plate drew a walk. Bobby fouled out down the 3B line to retire the side.
Gray– P Jack Kelly had the Gray batters off balance and retired all three hitters on infield grounders. Lynn grounded out to Ken at SS, Ray was retired on a grounder to Jack S. at 3B and Larry bounced out to short for a quick 1-2-3 inning.
End of 3rd Score: Gray 7 Red 1
Fourth Inning Recap:
Red- broke through with three runs in the inning to make this a ball game. Ken reached on an infield single but was out at 2B on Terry’s fielder’s choice groundout. Gene and Jack Kelly followed with back-to-back hits to the right side to load the bases. Jack Spellman singled in the 1st run with a base hit to right. Paul knocked in the 2nd run on an infield groundout to short. Jack Adams bounced out to short to close out the frame.
Gray– struck back with a couple of runs to extend their lead back to five runs. David was retired on a hard-hit line drive to Doc at 2B to start the inning. Louie and Tim followed with back-to-back singles. Barry was retired on a flyball to center field. Tom K. ripped a liner to right center that got past Terry T. for a two-run triple before Lucky went down swinging to retire the side.
End of 4th Score: Gray 9 Red 4
Fifth Inning Recap:
Red- after fighting an uphill battle all game, Red finally knotted the score with a five-run outburst in the 5th. extended their lead back to six runs as Orange tallied three more runs in the 5th. Terry T. reached 2B on an infield single with an overthrow of 1B to start the inning. Doc’s single drove in the 1st run. Patrick followed with an opposite filed liner for a hustling double. Bobby drilled a ball down the 3B line that deflected off Ray’s glove for a two-run single. Ken hit a bomb to dead center but had to slow up to avoid passing Bobby and settle for an RBI triple. Terry W. promptly ripped a single to center to score Ken and complete the five-run inning.
Gray– unable to score despite putting two men on base as the game remained tied. Scott singled to open the frame but was erased on Mike’s grounder to short. Lynn flew out to center for the 2nd out. Ray spanked a single to left but Larry was retired in a flyball to shallow center to end the inning.

Sixth “Open” Inning Recap:
Red needing to put up some runs to crank up the pressure on their opponents, Red failed to put up any runs in the buffet. Gene led off with a single to left. Jack bounced into a fielder’s choice for the 1st out. Jack S. grounded to the right side and Scott got the force at 2B for the 2nd out. Paul lined a single through the 5/6 hole to keep the inning going. Jack Adams reached on an infield single to load the bases with two out. Terry hit a flyball to deep center, but Barry secured it for the final out to keep the game tied.
Gray chasing one run to secure the victory, Gray wasted no time in getting the job done. Leadoff nan, David Safely, ripped a double to right center to get things started. New guy, Louis Caputo, lofted a short flyball to right that fell in, allowing the pinch runner from 2B to score easily for a walk-off win for the men in Gray!
Final Score: Gray 10 Red 9

First & Second Inning Recap:
Blue– jumped off to a quick start as the first six batters all reached base. Tommy DeLeon led off with a single through the 5/6 hole. Mike Hill ripped a double to right to put both runners in scoring position. Tim Coles smacked a single to left center to drive in both runners. Don Roets kept the hit parade going with a hard single through the 5/6 hole with Tim scoring the 3rd run on the play. Dave Berra’s single just inside 2B loaded the bases with nobody out. Daniel Baladez made the 1st out as he popped out to 3B. Johnny Neville lined out to 2B, and Raul drifted a little too far off 3B and was doubled off to end the inning. 2nd– P Terry Thompson clamped down on the Blue hitters in the 2nd, holding them to a single hit to keep the lead at three runs. Lucky Hoffman lined out to left center to open the inning, Donnie Janac laced a single up the middle but was forced out at 2B on Ken Brown’s grounder to short. Patrick hit a wicked shot to left center, but Jack Spekllman went airborne to make the catch for the final out.
Orange- facing the hottest team in the league, P Tommy DeLeon was up to the task and quieted the Orange bats in the first two frames. Terry Thompson grounded out to 3B to lead off the inning, Adam Gordon singled but was erased on Jack Adam’s fielder’s choice grounder to short. Steve Kendig grounded to Ken Brown at short to retire the side. 2nd– Jim Foelker opened the 2nd with a line single to left center. Jerry Mylius grounded into a 6-4-3 double play before Barry McRee bounced out to short to retire the side with all six outs coming on groundballs.

Third Inning Recap:
Blue- Tommy D. reached on an infield single to start the 3rd. Mike was retired on a nice running catch by Jim F. for the first out. Tim ripped a double-to-deep center field to put runners on 2B and 3B. P Terry T. was able to work out of the jam by getting Raul to foul out and inducing Don to hit a comebacker to close out the inning.
Orange- scratched out a couple of runs to get back in this game. After P Tommy retired the first two batters on groundballs to short and 3B, respectively, the mercenaries keyed a two-out rally. Back-to-back singles by Scott Wright and Jack Spellman and a walk to Ray Pilgrim loaded the bases. Terry T. came through with a big hit as his single to left center brought in two runs, Adam was retired for the final out but not before Orange cut the lead to a single run.
End of 3rd Score: Blue 3 Orange 2
Fourth Inning Recap:
Blue- unable to add to their lead despite picking up three hits in the inning. Dave led off the inning with a base hit to right. Daniel hit into a 6-4-3 double play and there were quickly two outs. Johnny reached on a looper over 3B and Lucky singled to left center, but Donnie bounced into a fielder’s choice to end the threat. Blue’s failure to take advantage of having men on base (seven men left on base through four innings) would come back to haunt them.
Orange- P Tommy D. had another shutdown inning despite giving up a couple of leadoff hits. Jack Adams singled and moved to 2B on the errant throw to 1B. Steve singled to move him to 3B. Jim F. bounced into a 6-4-3 double play as Jack did not attempt to advance on the play> Jerry’s grounder to 2N ended the inning with Jack remaining stranded at 3B.
End of 4th Score: Blue 3 Orange 2
Fifth Inning Recap:
Blue- after being held scoreless for the last three innings, Blue erupted with three runs in the 5th to grab a four-run lead, Ken reached on an infield single but was forced out at 2B on Patrick grounder to short. Tommy went down looking but singles by the next three batters (Mike, Tim and Raul) produced two run. Don drilled a hit up the middle to drive in the 3rd run before Dave bounced into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.
Orange- P Tommy D. helped Blue to protect their four-run lead by blanking Orange for yet another inning. Barry lined out to short to start the frame and Luther popped up to short as well for two quick outs. Back-to-back singles by Louis and Scott gave Orange a scoring opportunity but Jack S. flew out to center to end the inning.
End of 5th Score: Blue 6 Orange 2
Sixth “Open” Inning Recap:
Blue– looking to expand their narrow four-run lead, Blue was thwarted by P Terry T. and
came up scoreless in the buffet. Daniel led off with a single but was forced out at 2B on Johnny’s groundball to the right side. Lucky singled on a pop fly behind 3B to put runners on 1B and 2B. Donnie lined out to short and the runner from 2B was caught off the bag to complete an inning ending double play.
Orange– chasing four, Orange went to work. Barry led off with a sharp single to center. Terry T. crushed a ball to dead center field that soared over Patrick’s head for a run scoring triple. Adam drove him home with a ground single just inside the bag at 3B. Adam scored on Jack’s ringing double to left center to bring the Orangemen within a single run. Steve smacked a single down the left field line to move Jack to 3B. Jim’s single to left center drove in Jack with the tying run. Jerry produced the seventh hit in a row for Orange and his walkoff hit brought in Steve with the winning run.
Final Score: Orange 7 Blue 6

Gray maintained their slim lead over the idle Greenies with big bad Orange lurking in 3rd place just 2.50 games out but currently riding a six-game winning streak.

Game 1 8:00 a.m. Blue (5-8-0) vs. Green (5-5-1)
Blue has suffered some tough luck losses during their current four-game losing streak. Can they turn it around against the up and down Green squad? Can Green get on a winning streak to finally catch Gray and more importantly hold off the charging Orangemen?
Gray has umpiring duties for this one.
Game 2 9:00 a.m. Gray (6-5-1) vs. Red (5-6-0)
Gray still fighting to stay on top in the season long standing while Red is suffering through a three-game losing streak. Can Red still salvage the season by going on a tear, needs to happen sooner than later.
All will be revealed on Thursday!
Blue will be taking on the umpire responsibilities in this game.
Orange will have a bye on Thursday to rest on their laurels and also allow their players to have priority in the draw.
Breakfast Goodies– those that were here last Thursday noted that there were no breakfast tacos or doughnuts to enjoy before or during the games. As most of you know, Tommy DeLeon faithfully brings the goods every Monday and Thursday except when he is out of town for a tournament as was the case last week, What some folks don’t know is that the cost of the goodies is not covered by the league but through contributions from players that partake in the breakfast spread. There are some mornings when I don’t get a chance to eat and I’m so happy to know there will be food at the field because of Tommy’s time and generosity. Please make it a point to give if you enjoy the food and want to assure it will continue to magically appear every game day. Thank you Tommy!
