Thursday Nov. 21st: Final C div. Gms. On as scheduled

B League (non-) news for Tuesday October 31

B League Picayune

Often in error, never in doubt.

Volume 5, Issue 55 – October 31, 2023

Just a quick check-in edition of the Picayune, keeping my fingers in proper fettle in anticipation of reporting our return to play Thursday, and doing my best to not employ any dumb Halloween-related puns.

Games of Monday October 23 and Thursday October 26 were cancelled due to early-morning rain; games of Monday October 30 were cancelled due to wet fields and brutal (for Austin) cold weather.

The end-of-season luncheon, originally scheduled for Thursday October 26, was postponed to this Thursday November 2, per this missive from B League president Jack McDermott:

Continued rain is forecast for tomorrow with a greater chance overnight Wednesday and into Thursday. Since we have to give our caterer advanced notice to cancel, the board has decided to move the date of the lunch to next week, Thursday November 2. We do have the fire department under building space available, but with Thursday’s forecast calling for rain and thunderstorms, we figured that no one would really want to be out in it even with the covered protection. Next week is also supposed to be rainy the first part of the week, hopefully it will clear out by Thursday.

Thanks,

ASSL Board

Weather:
Sun came out today and the temperature climbed into the upper 50s. I think we’ll be able to play Thursday.

Schedule for November 2:
10:00 a.m.: Gray (2-6) at Green (2-6), Gold umpiring
10:45 a.m.: Red (4-4) at Gold (4-4), Green umpiring
11:30 a.m.: Maroon (6-2) at Blue (6-2), Red umpiring

Preview: With six dates rained out this session, we find ourselves with only six left to play. By a quirk of the weather and the schedule, each of today’s games matches teams with identical records. Gray and Green, each 2-6, will battle at 10:00 to escape last place; Red and Gold (4-4) will face off at 10:45 to see who’ll be in third place at day’s end; and the day’s biggest game will be its last, Maroon and Blue (6-2) battling for first place at 11:30. Will two weeks of inactivity plus the constraints of one-pitch play make for rusty and chaotic action? Only one thing is certain: Time will tell.

Keggy’s Korner:

1. Rerunning and amending this, from Jack McDermott:

The end of year banquet/lunch is scheduled for Thursday November 2. It will be held at the field after our games. I have put in a request to the city to relocate us to field 6 on that day as the area outside of that field is more suitable for gathering. We have available the fire department under building space in the event of a rainout, but we will wait and see what the weather brings.

The lunch will be catered by Lupe’s Tortilla, chicken and beef fajita tacos with sides, there will be limited drinks, iced tea, so bring your own if you want something different. No desserts will be furnished, so feel free to bring your favorite to share. Also there is limited seating, bleachers and a couple of picnic tables, so bring a lawn chair or two. We have a limited, 90-minute serving time from the caterer starting at 11:30 and ending at 1:00, so the games are as follows:

C-division-please get with your managers, but I was told that they will be playing one pitch games and will be finished by 10:00am.

B-division-Starting at 10:00am, all games will be one-pitch with a 40-minute clock and no extra innings – a tie game will end as a tie; further, if any time remains on the clock after 4 innings, then the 5th inning will be the buffet. Game 2 will start at 10:45am, and game 3 will start at 11:30am.

Hope to see you all there.
