Game Day Gazette
March 2, 2026
Welcome to the 2026 season of C division senior softball! The three-month winter break is over, and our first game back pitted the pre-season favorites, Gray, against last season’s runner-up from the Red team. As we draft new teams each year, there is very little carryover from one season to the next, but it is what it is!
Opening day weather was overcast with a nice breeze as we helped to ring in Texas Independence day! (state holiday making this morning’s commute a breeze!)
Game 1 8:30 a.m. Red (0-0-0) vs. Gray (0-0-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Red- both sides had full rosters to work with for this game, so no players were drawn from the bucket for the early contest. Doc Hobar had the honor of being the first batter of the new season and responded by lining a single to right field to open the game. Butch Barber walked and Sal Lopez beat out an infield hit to 3B to quickly load the bases. Ken Brown lined a single to drive in Doc and Butch to out the first two runs on the board. Ken and Butch advanced to 2B and 3B on the throw to the plate. Terry Watts lined one back to P Ray Pilgrim for the 1st out. Bobby Hawthorne fouled out for the 2nd out and Ray retired the side getting Mickey Poole on a pop out to short. 2nd- David Kruse opened the 2nd inning with a line drive back to Ray for the 1st out. Mike Mordecai followed with a screaming double to right center. Larry King moved him to 3B on a sharp single to right center. Ray worked out of the jam by getting Barry McRee to ground into a 6-4-3 double play started by Tim Coles at short.

Scott Wright led off the inning with a line shot to right field. Gary Coyle followed with a sharp ground single up the middle. Peter Atkins dropped in a fly to left center for a run-scoring double. Tim Coles drove in both runners with a sharp single to stake Gray to a one-run lead. Ray Pilgrim flew out to Bobby Hawthorne in center for the 1st out. Phil Stanch popped out to 1B for the 2nd out and P Sal Lopez coaxed Lynn Simpson into an inning ending groundout to 2B to limit the damage to three runs. 2nd- Mike Carroll opened the 2nd with a line single past 3B Mike Mordecai, Margarito reached on an infield single, and Art Monzingo drove in Mike with a single to right.
New guys, Larry Coon and David Safely, each grounded out to 2B with Doc making some excellent plays to get the outs at 1B as Margarito came around with the 2nd run. Scott lined out to short to end the inning with Ken making an exceptional catch to preserve his face!
End of 2nd Score: Gray 5 Red 2
Third Inning Recap:
Red- Morris Carter bounced out to 3B to start the inning. Doc reached on a walk and moved to 2B on Butch’s single past 1B. Sal drove in Doc with a sharp single through the 5/6 hole for the 1st run. Ken bounced one up the middle and Tim was able to get the force at 2B with the relay to 1B not in time to catch the speedy Dr. Brown! Terry crossed up the scouting report (always goes opposite field) with a ground single down the 3B line to score Butch. Bobby grounded to 3B and Gary got the force at 2B to close out the frame.
Gray- showing the length and strength of their lineup, Gray pounded out seven hits without making an out to put up five runs and grab a commanding lead in this one. Gary opened the frame with a hard single through the 5/6 hole. With the outfielders playing deep, Peter dropped in a short fly to left for a double. Tim smashed a ball to right that fell in for a two-run triple. Ray ripped a line single up the middle to score Tim with the 3rd run. Phil and Lynn singled to load the bases with nobody out. Mike lined a single to left to drive in two runs and cap off the Gray’s five-run inning.

Fourth Inning Recap:

Orange-the boys in burnt Orange struck back quickly with a five-run inning of their own to knot the score. Terry Thompson drilled a ball down the 3rd baseline for a single to get the inning started. Adam Gordon laced a single to CF and Jack Adams reached on a single to load the bases, Bobby Miller reached for a two-strike pitch and fouled it off for the 1st out. To say Bobby was not happy with this at-bat would be an understatement! New guy, Steve Kendig, smacked a two-run single up the middle in his C division debut. Jim Foelker drove a ball over the left center fielder’s head and with Jim’s speed, he was able to cruise around the bases for a three-run homer. 2nd- Jerry Mylius led off the inning with a single to right field. Bubba Barnett lined a single to CF and Greg Tolander followed with a hard single up the middle to load the bases with nobody out.
