Game Day Gazette
September 10, 2026
Time to say goodbye to the friendly confines of Krieg Field #2. After finishing out the 2025 season on K2, it has been our home for the entirety of the current season. We’ll miss the proximity of “real” bathrooms, the spacious beer garden and the short walk from the parking lot to the field. We won’t miss the blazing early morning sun in left field making left-handed batters and first baseman squint to the see the ball! But all good things must end, and we look forward to making new memories on our new home on K6 starting on Monday!

First & Second Inning Recap:
Gray- rallying around their injured manager, Peter Atkins, Gray stormed out to an early lead and never looked back. Scott Wright, rather than settle for his usual line drive single to right, crushed a ball to right center for a leadoff triple. Mike Carroll slashed a single to right center to bring in Scotty with the first run. Louis Caputo flew out to Patrick in left center for the 1st out. Gary Coyle grounded a single past the shortstop to move Mike to 3B. Ray Pilgrim hit a screamer down the left field line and Donnie Janac robbed him of extra bases with an excellent running catch for the 2nd out. Lynn Simpson reached on an infield hit as Mike scored from 3B. Jeff Broussard bounced back to P Sal Lopez for the final out. 2nd – the offense cranked it up in the 2nd as they put up five runs. David Safely was late arriving for the game (in his defense, we did start the clock eight minutes early) so Bobby Miller stepped in from the crowd to take his at bat. Bobby lined a single to left center and decided to test Patrick’s arm as he tried to stretch the hit into a double. Bad decision as Patrick’s throw was true and Bobby was out at 2B with the first out. Jim Foelker ripped a single to left center, but Tommy DeLeon flew out to left center for the 2nd out. Johnny Neville popped a single to center to keep the inning alive (turned out to be the key at bat in this five-run frame). The top of the order took it from there as Scotty and Mike came through with back-to-back run scoring singles. Louis knocked in the 3rd run with a single to left center. Gary hit a comebacker to P Sal Lopez and rather than getting the final out at 1B, the throw went awry (Lucky Hoffman struggled to hold on to the ball in the opening two frames) allowing both runners to score as Gary ended up on second base.
Red– Doc Hobar opened the inning with a single to center. John Flowers reached on an infield single to put runners on 1B and 2B. Patrick Schmidt grounded into a fielder’s choice (4-6) for the first out. P Ray Pilgrim proceeded to walk Ken Brown (back from his world record performance in Korea) and Terry Watts to force in the 1st run. Gene Nelson grounded to 2B and Jeff got the force at 2B, but Scotty’s relay sailed over Tommy’s head at 1B allowing both runners to score. Sal Lopez (welcome back!) grounded to 3B, and Gary made the unassisted put out to end the inning. 2nd– Morris Carter led off the 2nd with an infield single helped by Ken’s sprint from the plate. Jack Adams worked a walk to move Ken to 2B. He scored on Donnie Janac’s clean single to left center. Lucky Hoffman grounded up the middle and Scotty scooped up the ball and fired to 1B to complete the 6U 6-3 double play. Doc flew out to center to close out the frame.
End of 2nd Score: Gray 7 Red 4
3rd Inning Recap:
Gray- Ray ripped a single down the 3B line to start the 3rd inning. Lynn followed with a scorching drive to center that skipped past CF John Flowers and rolled to the fence as Lynn rounded the bases for a two-run home run. Jeff looped a single to center. David Safely went down on strikes for the 1st out. Jim and Tommy followed with back-to-back singles to push across the 2nd run. Johnny bounced into a fielder’s choice (4-6) for the 2nd out. Scotty drove in the 4th run with a ringing double to right. Mike put the cherry on top of Gray’s five-run inning with a hard single up the middle to score the final run.
Red– P Ray Pilgrim settled down in the 3rd and retired the heart of Red’s in order. John and Patrick were both retired on groundball out to 2B. Ken flew out to left center to put a quick end to the inning.
End of 3rd Score: Gray 12 Red 4
Fourth Inning Recap:
Gray– already up by eight, Gray extended their lead to twelve with a four-run outburst in the 4th. Louis opened the 4th with an infield single as Red continued to struggle to make the routine defensive plays. Gary grounded into a fielder’s choice (4-6) for the 1st out. Ray popped a ball to shallow center that John probably should have caught but it fell in for a single. Lynn, showing his new found power stroke, smacked one to right center that got past Gene to give him his 2nd home run of the game (MVP!). Jeff reached on an infield single as Jack’s throw to 1B pulled Lucky off the bag. David flew out to right for the 2nd out. Jim launched a missile to left center over Patrick’s head for a run-scoring triple before Tommy fouled out to retire the side.
Red– Ray continued to hold Red at bay with some defensive help in the scoreless 4th inning. Terry walked to open the frame. Gene grounded sharply to 1B, Tommy came up with the ball, smartly stepped on 1B for one and threw to 2B t complete the 3U 3-6 double play. Sal slapped a single to left but was left stranded as Morris went down looking to end the frame.
End of 4th Score: Gray 16 Red 4
Fifth Inning Recap:
Gray– P Sal blanked Gray to keep this one from completely getting out of hand. Johnny grounded out to 3B to start the inning. Scotty single but was erased on Mike’s grounder to 2B. Louie grounded to short for an inning ending fielder’s choice.
Red- just when it was looking like a flip flop was sure to happen, Red woke up and erupted for five big runs. Jack led off with a single to left. Donnie lined one back to Ray for the 1st out. Lucky reached on an infield single to keep things moving. Doce smacked a single through the 5/6 hole to load the bases. John’s walk forced in the 1st run. Patrick drilled one up the middle for a two-run single. Ken followed with a base hit to center to bring in the 4th run. Terry dropped in a single to right to complete the five-run inning, This narrowed the lead to seven runs so rathe than flip flop, we agreed to let Gray bat in their buffet inning,
End of 5th Score: Gray 16 Red 9
Sixth “Open” Inning Recap:
Gray– only needed three runs to invoke a flip flop but it looked like Sal was going to shut them down as he retired Ray and Lynn after Gary led off with a single. Jeff kept the inning alive with a single and David ripped a two-base hit to bring in the 1st run. Jim’s infield single brought in the 2nd run. Tommy pushed the lead to ten runs with a line single to right field.
Red– down by ten, Red mounted a rally, but it was took steep of a hill to climb. Gene led off with a single to center and Sal followed with a grounder just inside the bag at 3B. Morris bounced into a fielder’s choice for the 1st out. Jack and Donnie followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Lucky grounded one through the 5/6 hole to load the bases with one out. Doc hit a flyball to right center that was deep enough to score the run from 3B as Jim F. made the catch for the 2nd out. John worked a full count, but Ray’s next pitch just touched the front of the plate and he was called out on strikes to end the ball game.
Final Score: Gray 19 Red 12

First & Second Inning Recap:
Orange– with Jack Adams returning to the lineup and Bobby Miller sticking around for a few more games, Orange put up a powerful lineup for today’s game vs. the session and season ling leaders. Jack led off with a ground single past yours truly at shortstop. Before we go any further, I need to apologize to my teammates for my putrid play at short in this contest. With our outstanding regular shortstop, Jack Spellman. in Germany enjoying the sights, sounds and suds while cheering on his daughter in the world kayak water polo championships, Green was left with me as backup. No Wally Pip moment here, hurry back Jack, we miss you! Bobby Miller followed with a single to right as Jack scampered to 3B. Jim Foelker smacked a single to left to bring in the first run. Terry Thompson did likewise as he drove in the 2nd run. Steve Kendig made the 1st out as he bounced into a fielder’s choice as I stepped on the base for the first out but the double play did not happen as my throw to 1B sailed well over Larry King’s head. Adam Gordon continued his “heater’ at the plate, this time lining one to right to bring in the 3rd run. Barry McRee grounded to 3B where Robby made an unassisted putout for the 2nd out. Bubba Barnett reached on an infield single as Adam scored the 4th run before Rick Parker made the final out. 2nd– Ken Brown grounded out to short to open the inning. John Flowers singled to right to kickstart the rally. Jack singled and Bobby ripped a double to right to drive in the 1st run. Jim ripped a single to left center to bring in both runners and push the run total to three in the frame. Terry and Steven produced a 4th run with back-to-back singles. Barry flew out to left for the 2nd out, but Bubba came through with a two-out single to drive in Terry with the 5th run.
Green- continuing a frustrating day at the park for this writer, I fouled out to start the inning. Luis Sanchez reached on an infield single but Denny Malloy, perhaps following my lead, went down on strikes for the 2nd out. Mickey Poole bounced into a fielder’s choice to end the scoreless frame. 2nd– Green welcomed the return of Tom Brownfield to the lineup after an extended absence, and he proceeded to pop out to 3B in his first plate appearance. Tom Kelm hit a grounder to short but the throw to 1B got past Bubba allowing Tom’s pinch runner to reach 2B. William Powell smacked a double down the left field line to finally put Green on the scoreboard. The good times didn’t last as Robby Vickery popped out to 1B, and Larry King popped out to 3B to retire the side.
End of 2nd Score: Orange 9 Green 1
Third Inning Recap:
Orange- sensing they had the league leaders on the ropes, Orange kept pouring it on as they tallied four more runs in the inning. Rick and Ken opened the frame with back-to-back singles. John was retired for the 1st out. Jack Adams ripped a double to left to bring in a run. Bobby reached on an infield single and Jim brought both runners home with a solid double to left center. P Luis Sanchez managed to avoid any further damage as Orange stormed out to a 13-1 lead.
Green- down by twelve runs after playing as poorly as we have all season over the first two and one-half innings, Green could either give up or shut up and play. Thankfully, we chose the latter and responded with a five-run inning of our own to get back withing striking distance. Jeff bounced out to 3B to open the frame, but Gary and Paul followed with back-to-back singles. Luis slapped an RBI single to right to start the scoring. Denny laced a single to right center to push across the 2nd run. Mickey was retired on a pop to short for the 2nd out. Tom B. looped a run-scoring single to right center to get the 3rd run across. Tom K. came up with a clutch single to center to drive in two more runs to complete the five-run 3rd inning.
End of 3rd Score: Orange 13 Green 6
Fourth Inning Recap:
Orange- if the outcome had been different, I would have said this was the pivotal inning of the game, but it was not the case. It looked like more of the same as the first three batters (Steve, Adam and Barry) all reached on singles to load the bases with nobody out. Bubba hit one back to the box and despite his throwing limitation due to a bad shoulder, Luis somehow got the ball to the plate to get the force for the 1st out. Luis then struck out both Rick and Ken looking to close out the frame without giving up a run.
Green- inspired by their pitcher, Green out up another five-spot to make this a ball game. William fouled out to open the inning. Robby and Larry set the stage with back-to-back singles. Jeff worked a walk to load the bases with only one out. Gary singled up the middle to drive in two runs, and Green was on the go. Paul knocked in the 3rd run with a ground single to left center. Luis rocketed a single to right to bring in the 4th run. Denny hit one back to the pitcher and rather than go home, Terry threw to 2B to get the force, but Bobby was unable to complete the double play as I trotted home from 3B with the 5th run.
End of 4th Score: Orange 13 Green 11
Fifth “Open” Inning Recap:
Orange- with their once sizable lead now reduced to two runs, Orange was looking to play add on in the buffet. Johnny bounced out to 2B to lead off the inning. Jack hit a wicked shot up the middle that Luis speared for the 2nd out. Bobby kept the inning alive with a single to right. Jim put a good swing on the ball but his flyball to left center went directly into Gary’s glove for the 3rd and final out. As an aside, the top three batters for Orange went 10-12 (.833 average), scored eight runs and knocked in eight as well. Well, done!
Green- only down by two runs, Green had a chance to steal this one and make a statement about which team was the best in the league. If this were fiction, I would tell you they mounted an unbelievable rally and came away with a dramatic victory but alas that was not the case. scored. Orange employed a new defensive alignment in the buffet as John essentially played rover with the other four outfielders playing deep. Not sure who came up with plan, but it worked to perfection as Mickey lined the first pitch directly to John for an out. No doubt this would have been a leadoff single against the traditional defense. Tom B. followed with a sky-high Somehow, the ball clanked off the fielder’s glove for a double. Tom K. flew out to left center for the 2nd out. William lined out to 3B to end any hope and give Orange the win,

After racing out to a three-game lead with six consecutive wins, Green has come back down from the top with back-to-back losses. Orange appears to be the hottest team right now, but everyone knows that could change with the next slate of games.
