First & Second Inning Recap:
Orange- Adam opened the contest with a single up the middle. Terry Thompson popped out to 3B on a nice catch by Gary Coyle for the first out. Bobby Miller returned to the lineup with a vengeance as he smoked the first pitch to right center between Larry Coons and Louie Caputo for a two-run inside the park home run. Steven Kendig bounced out to short for the 2nd out. Jim Foelker drew a walk, and Barry McRee ripped a single to left center to extend the inning. Jerry Mylius grounded into a fielder’s choice to close out the inning. 2nd – Bruce Barnett, playing for the first time in some time, unceremoniously went down swinging in his first at-bat. Jack Spellman rocketed one down the right field line for Orange’s 2nd inside the park homer. Patrick Schmidt followed with a hustling double to left center. He was left stranded as Tom Kelm grounded out to short and Adam flew out to center to retire the side.
Gray– playing short-handed in this tilt as Peter Atkins shared that he is through playing (not managing) for the season due to injury. In other news, Ray Pilgrim missed his first game of the season due to work responsibilities. Leadoff man par excellence, Scott Wright, flew out to right center to kick this one off. Mike Carroll drilled a double to right center to get things started. He scored on Louie Caputo’s single to left. Gary Coyle bounced into a fielder’s choice (5-4) for the 2nd out. Lynn Simpson smacked a single to left center, but P Terry Thompson was able to get Jeff Broussard to hit into a fielder’s choice (4-6) to end the inning. 2nd– Larry Coons led off the 2nd with a line single to left. He scored on Raul DeLeon’s triple to deep right center. Raul scored the 2nd run on Paul Rubin’s ground out to 2B. Donnie Janac looped a single to right field and Morris Carter reached on an infield single to turn over the lineup. Scotty walked to load the bases and Mike stroked his 2nd double of the game to drive in two more runs. Louie slapped a single through the left side to plate Mike with the 5th run.
End of 2nd Score: Gray 6 Orange 3
3rd Inning Recap:
Orange- pulled within a run with a two-run outburst in the 3rd. Terry led off with a sharp single to left and Bobby d=followed with a groundball double to right. Steven fouled out for the 1st out. Jim flew out to right but the flyball was deep enough to score the runner from 3B. Barry knocked in the 2nd run with his 2nd hit of the game before Jerry was retired on a flyball to right for the final out.
Gray– Gary and Lynn opened the 3rd with back-to-back singles. Jeff was retired on flyball out to 2B. Larry’s single to right brought in Gary with the 1st run. Raul flew out to right center for the 2nd out. Paul slapped a single up the middle to bring in Lynn with the 2nd run. Donnie grounded to short and Jack flipped to 2B to get the force and end the frame as Gray regained their three-run lead.
End of 3rd Score: Gray 8 Orange 5
Fourth Inning Recap:
Orange– broke through with a big five-run inning to grab the lead. Bruce went down swinging to open the frame. Jack and Patrick followed with back-to-back singles. Tom Kelm drove in the 1st run with a line single to center. Adam bounced into a fielder’s choice (4-6) for the 1st out. Terry’s single brought in the 2nd run. Bobby completed a perfect 3-3 day at the plate with an RBI single to left. Steve singled to left center to drive home the 4th run. Jim finished off the five-run frame with a hard single to left center as Orange jumped out to a 10-8 lead.
Gray– P Terry T. did a good job protecting Orange’s two-run lead with a shutdown inning in the 4th. Morris led off with a comebacker to Terry for the 1st out. Scott singled but was forced out at 2B on Mike’s fielder’s choice ground out. Louie then flew out to left to retire the side.
End of 4th Score: Orange 10 Gray 8
Fifth “Open” Inning Recap:
Orange– extended their lead with two more runs in the buffet. P Raul DeLeon retired the first two batters getting Barry on a foul ball caught by Morris and a humpback liner off Jerry’s bat for the 2nd out. Bruce finally broke through with a big hit as he connected with the ball for a crucial infield single to spark the two-out rally. Jack laced a double to right to put both runners in scoring position. Patrick delivered the big blow as he stroked a single up the middle to drive in two runs. Tom grounded out to 2B, but the damage was done and Orange held a four-run lead heading into Gray’s final at bat.
Gray- unable to mount a serious threat in the open inning. Gary grounded out to short to lead things off. Lynn completed a perfect 3-3 day at the plate with a single. Jeff followed with a grounder to short that Jack parlayed into a game ending 6-4-3 double play.

First & Second Inning Recap:
Green– leadoff batter Paul Rubin looped a ball down the left field line to start the game. As I was watching to see if Raul DeLeon would make the catch, somehow the bat and my legs got tangled and I went down in a heap in my best Chevy Chase pratfall. I was able to pick myself and get to 1B turning a likely double into a single. Jack Spellman drew a walk, and Luis Sanchez flew out to left center for the 1st out. Denny Malloy, currently on a heater that had produced twelve consecutive hits, singled to bring in the first run. Mickey Poole followed with a blast to left center that sailed over the fielders for a two-run triple. Robby Vickery slapped a single to right to bring in Mickey with the 4th run. The relay from the outfield got past Mike Hill and rolled towards the left field fence. I kept running as the ball evaded Daniel Baladez and I was able to get home just ahead of the throw completing an “inside the park” home run for Robby. 2nd– William Powell opened the 2nd with a hard grounder to 3B, Daniel Baladez’ strong throw to 1B beat him by a step for the 1st out. Tom Kelm singled ahead of Larry King’s strike out for the 2nd out. Patrick Schmidt extended the inning with a single to right center. Terry Thompson struck the big blow with a ringing double to left to drive in both runners. Paul followed with a run scoring double to left (avoiding pratfall #2) before Jack flew out to center to end the frame.
Blue- already down by eight, Blue needed a fast start to get back in this one. Tommy DeLeon lined a single to right to get the ball rolling. Mike Hill singled but Johnny Neville bounced into a fielder’s choice (6-4) for the 1st out. Raul DeLeon and Donnie Janac followed with back-to-back run scoring singles. Henry Flores kept things going with an RBI single for Blue’s 3rd run. Daniel Baladez extended the consecutive hit streak to four with his single to left to plate Donnie with the 4th run. Chris Hurst grounded one to 3B and Robby stepped on the base and fired to 2B to complete the inning ending 5U 5-4 double play 2nd– P Luis Sanchez righted the ship and proceeded to shut down the Blue batters in order in the 2nd. Dave Berra ground out to short to open the frame. Lucky Hoffman hit a sizzler up the middle that deflected off Luis’ glove directly to Jack Spellman. Jack made the throw to 1B for the 2nd out (that’s 1-6-3 for those scoring at home!). Super sub, Bobby Miller, hit a rocket down the 1B line but Larry King made a great stop on the ball and easily beat Bobby to the base to end the inning.
End of 2nd Score: Green 8 Blue 4
Third Inning Recap:
Green- P Tommy DeLeon helped to keep his team in the game by holding Green scoreless in the 3rd. Luis lined a single to right center to lead off the inning, Denny’s consecutive hit streak finally ended as he lined out to right center on a well struck ball. Mickey grounded into a fielder’s choice (6-4) for the 2nd out. Robby stayed hot with a base hit to right, but William bounced into a fielder’s choice to short to close out the frame.
Blue- closed the gap to a single run with a three-run outburst in the 3rd. Jim Foelker popped out to short to open the inning. Tommy and Mike followed with back-to-back singles. Johnny lined a ball to right center that had base hit written all over it. Patrick was playing the line and got to the ball quickly. His throw to Jack just beat the runner from 1B for the 2nd out. Raul’s single brought in the runner from 3B to get Blue on the board. Donnie continued to confound the Green defense as he laced an RBI single to right for the 2nd run. Henry picked up the 3rd hit in a row to bring in Raul with Blue’s 3rd run. Daniel flew out to right center to close out the inning.
End of 3rd Score: Green 8 Blue 7
Fourth Inning Recap:
Green- Tom led off the 4th with a clean single up the middle. His pinch runner was forced out at 2B on Larry’s grounder to short. Patrick singled but Terry was retired on a comebacker for the 2nd out. Paul singled through the 5/6 hole to bring in the first run. Jack doubled to right center to bring Patrick around to score. 3B coach, Tom K,, gave Paul the green light to go for 3B on the paly but Bobby made a strong relay throw to Mike and his throw to 3B beat me by a step for the final out.
Blue- down by two, Blue was unable to generate any offense and went down quietly in the 4th inning. Chris opened the frame by grounding out to short. The next two batters, Dave and Lucky, were unlucky as each hitter popped out to Luis to complete the 1-2-3 shutdown inning for Green.
End of 4th Score: Green 11 Blue 7
Fifth Inning Recap:
Green- Luis opened the 4th with an arching fly ball to right that soared over the fielder’s head allowing Luis to circle the bases for a leadoff home run! Denny grounded sharply to 2B for the first out. Mickey flew out to left for the 2nd out. Robby picked up his 3rd hit with a single to left center but Tommy retired William on a flyball to left center to end the inning.
Blue- P Luis continued to dominate from the bump as he completed back-to-back shut out innings. Bobby Miller went Casey Stengel with a mighty swing and a miss as he struck out to open the inning, Jim was retired on a flyball to left center for the 2nd out. Tommy and Mike continued to be excellent table setters for Blue with back-to-back hits for the 3rd time in the ball game. Unfortunately, Johnny could not take advantage of the men on base and lined out to short to end the inning.
End of 5th Score: Green 11 Blue 7
Sixth “Open” Inning Recap:
Green- broke this one open with a six-run explosion to stretch the lead to ten runs. Tom led off with a grounder to 3B, and Daniel made another strong throw to 1B for the out. Larry came through with a huge hit as he lined one to left fielder to get a runner on base. Patrick completed a perfect 3-3 day at the plate with a single to right. Terry’s single loaded the bases with nobody out. Paul lined one just over Mike Hill’s outstretched glove at short for a two-run single. Jack stroked a double to right to bring in the 3rd run. Luis ripped a hard single to right center to bring in two more runs. Denny quickly rediscovered his hitting stroke and drilled a base hit to left center. Mickey ground into a fielder’s choice for the 2nd out. At this point, Blue manager Johnny Neville approached home plate umpire Jeff Broussard about doing a flip flop. Green was ahead 16-7 at the time and C league rules stipulate that a flip flop will occur when one team has a ten-run lead over the other. Discussion ensued and Green remained on offense. Robby quickly put an end to the “controversy” as he lined a single to right (completing a perfect 4-4 day at the plate) to extend the lead to ten runs and prompt the teams to flip flop!
Blue- down by ten, it was going to take some kind of miracle for Blue to come back in this one. Raul led off the inning with a sharp single to right center. Donnie followed with his 3rd hit in as many at bats as he continued to find success going to right field. Raul was off with the hit rounding 2B and deciding to continue to 3B. William reached the ball quickly and his throw to Jack was on target. Jack whirled and gave everything he had on his relay to Robby at 3B and his throw beat Raul by a step for the 1st out. Henry fouled out for the 2nd out and Daniel ended things by grounding one back to Luis for the final out.
Final Score: Green 17 Blue 7
