Last day of June and we have many more months of hotter and drier weather to look forward to. Don’t forget to continue to hydrate as it’s going to be hot! Lots of players retreating to cooler climates to escape the Texas heat which mean more opportunities to play multiples games in the future. Show up early if you want to play two!
Game 1 8:30 a.m. Braves (2-0-0) vs. Senators (2-1-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Braves- Doc Hobar led off with a sharp grounder to 3B that Dean Hector turned into the 1st out of the game. Bobby “Extra base” Miller stroked a double to left to kick off the Braves offense. Paul Rubin crushed a ball over Terry Watt’s head in left center for a two-run inside the park homer. Tom Brownfield singled and moved to 3B on Jim Foelker’s line drive double to right center. Tom Kelm drive in both runners with a clean shot to left. Lynn Simpson’s single moved the pinch runner to 3B, and he tallied the 5th run on Dave Berra’s sacrifice fly to CF. 2nd- Joe Dayoc ripped a single past Dean down the 3B line to lead off the 2nd. Brian Rider hit a grounder to 3B and Dean made the throw to 2B for the force and the 1st out (lot of action at the “hot corner” this morning!). The Braves lone mercenary, Scott Wright, drilled a ball between 1B and 2B for a run-scoring double. He scored on Doc’s pop fly double over 2B. Bobby lashed a triple down the right field line to score Doc with the 3rd run. Paul doubled to left center to score Bobby and came in with the 5th run on Tom B.’s single to right center.
Senators- down ten runs after the Braves turn at the plate, the Senators struggled against the Braves crafty veteran pitcher, Tom Kelm. Terry Thompson led off the game with a line single to left. Greg Lloyd bounced out to 2B for the 1st out. Raul De Leon drilled a pitch to left that Jim Foelker was able to grab for the 2nd out. Dean Hector followed with another line drive to left but Jim was positioned perfectly to make the catch and retire the side. 2nd– Terry Watts opened the 2nd with a single to right. Henry Flores hit into a fielder’s choice out at 2B for the 1st out. Jerry Myilus popped out to 3B on a nice hustling catch by Tom B. Rick Parker went down swinging for the final out.
End of 2nd Score: Braves 10 Senators 0
Third Inning Recap:
Braves– Jim led off the 2nd with a sharp single to left center. He moved to 2B on Tom K.’s sacrifice fly to left. Lynn singled to bring in Jim with the 1st run of the inning. Dave grounded to Raul who turned an inning ending 6U 6-3 double play to hold the Braves to a single run.
Senators- got themselves back into the game with a five-run outburst in the 3rd. Will Scheerer singled to start the inning. Roger Geras drew a walk, and mercenary Jim Aaron ripped a single up the middle to bring in the Senators 1st run. The next five batters (Terry T., Greg, Raul, Dean and Terry W.) all reached base on singles to produce four more runs and narrow the Braves lead to three runs.
End of 3rd Score: Braves 11 Senators 5
Fourth Inning Recap:
Braves- extended their lead back to eleven runs with a five-run inning of their own. The bottom of the lineup led the way in the 4th. Joe and Brian had back-to-back hits to start the inning. Scott lashed a hit to right to drive in Joe with the 1st run. Doc followed with a double to drive in the 2nd run. Bobby’s double to right produced two more runs. Paul grounded out to 1B. Tom B. stepped up and hit a rocket to right center to drive in Bobby with the 5th run.
Senators– failed to score in the 4th. Henry singled to start the inning. Jerry flew out to right center for the 1st out. Rick hit into a fielder’s choice out at 2nd for the next out. Will ground out to 2B as Doc range far to his left to make the play to retire the side.
End of 4th Score: Braves 16 Senators 5
Fifth Inning Recap:
Braves- Terry T. limited the Braves to a single run in the 5th. Jim led off with a base hit. Tom K. followed with a single to put runners on 1B and 3B. Lynn bounced into a force at 2B for the 1st out as Jim crossed the plate with the 1st run. Dave popped out to 2B, and Joe ground out to SS to close out the frame.
Senators– Roger led off with a groundball to 3B, Tom B. throw was low, but Scott made a nice scoop to get the out. Jim hit a fly to deep center that Lynn never saw as it sailed over his head and banged against the fence for a double. Terry T. ground out to short on a nice backhand stab and strong throw by Bobby to get the out. Greg, going against his strong right field tendencies, lined a shot between Jim and Paul for a run-scoring double. He scored on Raul’s hit up the middle. Dean bounced into a fielder’s choice to short for the final out.
End of 5th Score: Braves 17 Senators 7
Sixth (Open) Inning Recap:
Senators– with the Senators down by ten, the teams flip flopped, and the Senators remained at the plate for their buffet inning. Terry W. lined out to Dave in right center for the 1st out. Henry singled but was forced out at 2B on Jerry’s groundball to 2B. Rick hit a groundball to short that Bobby flipped to Doc for the force at 2B to end the game.
Final Score: Braves 17 Senators 7
Game 2 9:30 a.m. Sultans (2-0-0) vs. Keystones (0-2-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Sultans- came out of the dugout swinging in this one! Chris Villareal opened the game with a groundout to 2B, but the next eight batters reached base on the way to a five-run 1st inning. Ray Pilgrim singled to start the rally. Peter Atkins and Don Roets had back-to-back singles to load the bases. Phil Stanch launched a drive down the right field line that skipped past the outfielders allowing him to circle the bases for an inside-the- park grand slam homer! Rip Wright smoked a single to left to keep the hit parade going. Adam Gordon singled and Lucky Hoffman walked to reload the bases. Jack Kelly popped a ball in the infield that no one could get to as Rip came across the plate with the 5th run. 2nd-Ray Saldana and Mickey Poole opened the 2nd with back-to-back singles (running the consecutive on-base streak to ten batters) but the rally quickly died as Chris V. struck out and Ray P. ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.
Keystones- Mike Hill led off by plying out to Chris in right center. Patrick Schmidt followed with a base hit to right and moved to 3B on Ken Brown’s double to left. Barry McRee hit a groundball to left and Adam collided with Ray or vice versa resulting in an infield hit with Patrick scoring from 3B. Tommy DeLeon laced a single to left driving in Ken with the 2nd run. Margarito Canava flew out to Peter in CF for the 2nd out. On the play, Barry was late getting back to the base and Peter’s throw to Adam resulted in a double play to end the inning. 2nd– Jack Kelly shut down the Keystones in the 2nd. Robby Vickery led off with a single but Greg Tolander and Johnny Neville both fouled out for two quick outs. Morris Carter hit into a fielder’s choice out at 2B to retire the side.

Third Inning Recap:
Sultans– Peter started the inning by flying out to Phil for the 1st out. Don singled but was forced out at 2B on Phil’s grounder to SS. Rip and Adam had back-to-back singles to load the bases but Tommy wriggled out of the jam by getting Lucky to pop out to 3B.
Keystones- jumped on top with a five-run outburst to grab the lead in this one. Jack Adams singled to start the frame. Raul DeLeon flew out to CF for the 1st out. Mike singled and Patrick lined a shot that caromed off Jack Kelly’s chest (he later reported that he was ok) for a single to score Jack Adams with the 1st run. Ken singled to load the bases. Barry bounced into a fielder’s choice at 2B as Mike came across with the 2nd run. Tommy lined a ball to right to drive Patrick in with the 3rd run. Margarito’s single brought Barry in to score, and Robby finished off the inning with a line drive to right to score the 5th run.
End of 3rd Score: Keystones 7 Sultans 5
Fourth Inning Recap:
Sultans– were able to scratch out a run in the 4th to narrow the lead to one run. Jack K. lined out to Tommy to open the inning. Ray S. drilled a base hit down the 3B line and Mickey followed with a single to put runners on 1B and 2B. Chris singled to score the pinch runner, but the inning quickly ended as Ray P. bounced into a 6-4-3 double play.
Keystones- pushed across five more runs to take control of the game. The bottom part of the Keystone’s lineup came through big-time to key the five-run outburst. Greg led off with a single. Johnny reached on a pop fly that fell in for a hit. Morris lined a single to CF to load the bases. Jack Adams and Raul were both retired on pop ups to 2B, and it looked like Jack Kelly might get out of the inning unscathed. But the Keystones were not done. Mike laced a two-run single to right, Patrick banged out an RBI single and Ken wrapped up the scoring with a two-run double.

Sixth (Open) Inning Recap:
Sultans– did not go down without a fight in the buffet. Peter led off with a drive to deep center that Jack Adams narrowly missed but fell in for a triple. Don followed with a run-scoring double. Phil struck out but Rip singled to drive in Don with the 2nd run. Adam kept the rally going with a base hit. Lucky ripped a single to left to bring Rip home with the 3rd run. Jack Kelly bounced into a fielder’s choice for the 2nd out. Ray S. hit a sharp grounder to 3B that Margarito gloved and threw to 2B to get the force and end the game.
Final Score: Keystones 12 Sultans 9

The Braves extended their lead over the idle Pioneers to six full games. Again, the season is less than half over and there is still lots of vacation time and softball tournaments to come that could impact the standings.
