Happy Tax Day! Hope you all remembered to file your taxes, if not it’s not to0 late to file an extension. Now on to happier things! Two hard-fought great games played on Monday.
Game 1 8:30 a.m. Senators (4-5-0) vs. Pioneers (5-4-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Pioneers– Scott Wright led off with a line single to left (so what else is new!) followed by a single from Mike Carroll. Butch Barber ground into a fielder’s choice on a nice play at 2B by Mike Hill. Mickey Poole grounded out to 3B for the 2nd out as Scott came across for the 1st run of the inning. Larry hit another groundball to Curt at 3B for the final out of the inning. 2nd–Sal Lopez opened the 2nd with a groundout to 3B. Bubba Barnett struck out and Gene Nelson hit yet another groundball to 3B for the final out. Kudos to Curt Ashmos for his flawless fielding as four of the last five batters were retired on groundball to 3B.
Senators- Terry Thompson opened the game for the Senators with a line single to left. Raul DeLeon flew out to Patrick Schmidt in left center for the 1st out. Henry Flores walked, and Tim Coles flew out to deep center on another nice catch by Patrick. Terry Watts hit into a fielder’s choice groundout to 2B for the final out of this scoreless 1st inning. 2nd– Curt Ashmos worked a walk leading off the 2nd but was forced out at 2B on Greg Lloyd’s grounder. Jerry Mylius and Will Scheerer had back-to-back hits to load the bases. P Sal Lopez walked Paul Rubin to force in the 1st run for the Senators. Mike Hill laced a single to right center to bring in two more runs. Terry T. followed with an RBI single as Paul scored the 4th run of the inning to give the Senators an early lead.
End of 2nd Score: Senators 4 Pioneers 1
Third Inning Recap:
Pioneers– struck back with three runs in the inning to knot the score at 4-4. Jim Foelker led off with a line drive that went over Paul’s head to the fence in left center. Paul retrieved the ball and made a strong relay throw to Tim Coles in short left field. Tim made a perfect throw to Curt at 3B ahead of the runner for the 1st out of the inning. Mike Mordecai ground out to SS for the 2nd out. The Pioneer two-out rally was started by Patrick Schmidt’s single. Scott followed with another single. Mike Carroll unloaded with a drive to center field for a triple to score both runners. Butch singled to drive in Mike with the 3rd run. Mickey kept the inning going with another hit, but Raul got Larry King to pop out to short to end the frame.
Senators- Tim Coles led off the inning with a booming drive for a home run over the center field fence. Terry Watts was retired on a groundball to short for the 1st out. Kurt and Greg had back-to-back hits and Jerry walked to load the bases. Will delivered with an RBI single to right center for the 1st run. Paul followed with a two-run single that just got by Scott at SS. Mike H. flew out to right field for the 2nd out. Terry T. slapped a single to left to bring in the 4th run. The inning ended with Raul flying out for the 3rd time in the game.
End of 3rd Score: Senators 8 Pioneers 4
Fourth Inning Recap:
Pioneers- grabbed the lead with a five-run outburst. The Pioneers marched eight batters to the plate in the inning and all of them got hits to produce the five runs. Sal, Bubba and Gene started the inning with hits to plate the 1st run. Jim, Mike M. and Patrick followed with run-scoring singles to account for runs 2-4. Scott and Mike C. finished off the inning with back-to-back singles to score the 5th run and give the Pioneers a 9-8 lead.
Senators- not to be outdone, the Senators responded with their own five-run inning to reclaim the lead. Henry led off the inning with a ringing double to RC. Tim singled to move him to 3B, and he scored on Terry W.’s hit to right. Curt popped out to 3B for the 1st out. Greg loped a double just inside the right field foul line to drive in the 2nd run. Jerry ground out to 2B for the 2nd out. Will and Paul had back-to-back run scoring singles to put up two more runs. Mike H. finished off the scoring with a line shot to right center to score Will with the 5th run.
End of 4th Score: Senators 13 Pioneers 9
Fifth Inning Recap:
Pioneers- battled back with three runs to close the gap to one run. Butch opened the frame with a long arching fly to right that hit the fence on a bounce for an inside the park home run. Mickey singled and moved to 2B on Larry’s base on balls. Bubba ground into a 6-4-3 double play with Mickey advancing to 3B. Gene singled to bring in Mickey for the 2nd run of the inning. Jim and Mike M. had back-to-back hits to drive in the 3rd run. Patrick lined a shot up the middle that Raul was able to deflect to Tim and he spun around and got the force at 2B to end the inning.
Senators- continued to rake at the plate as the Orange men sent eight men up in the inning with all eight getting hits (all singles) to put up yet another five-run inning. Terry T. started things with a hit and Raul, Henry, Tim, Terry W., Curt, Greg and Jerry followed with hits as the Senators stretched their lead to 18-12.
End of 5th Score: Senators 18 Pioneers 12
Sixth Inning Recap:
Pioneers- needing six runs to tie and seven to take the lead, the Pioneers pounded out six hits and five runs in the frame. Scott was retired for the only time in the game on a groundout to 2B leading off the inning. Mike C. singled and scored on Butch’s triple to right center. Mickey’s single brought Butch in for the 2nd run. Larry and Sal had back-to-back hits to load the bases. Bubba smacked a two-run single to pull the Pioneers within two runs. Gene ground out to 2B for the 2nd out as Sal crossed the plate to narrow the Senator’s lead to a single run. Jim lifted a fly ball to short left center and Paul nearly overran the ball but managed to trap it against his chest as it tumbled out of his glove for a game ending catch. Whew!
Final Score: Senators 18 Pioneers 17
Game 2 9:30 a.m. Sultans (3-7-0) vs. Keystones (5-5-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Keystones- another closely fought affair that came down to the last at-bat. Mike Hill singled to start the game but was forced out at 2B on Alex Valles groundout. John Flowers singled to move Alex to 3B, and he scored on Ken Brown’s double to right. Patrick Schmidt ripped a single to right center to score Ken and John. After Tommy DeLeon was retired on a line drive to SS Adam Gordon, Mike Mordecai doubled to score Patrick. Bobby Hawthorne capped off the inning with a hard single to score Mike with the fifth run. 2nd– different story in the 2nd as Jack Kelly shut the door on the bottom part of the Keystones lineup. Robby Vickery was retired on a hard groundball to 1B Chris hurst for the 1st out. Barry McRee grounded out to shortstop and Henry Flores went down looking at strike three for the final out.
Sultans-like their adversaries, the Sultans put up a five-run inning of their own in the 1st. Phil Stanch led off with a single and moved to 2B on Donnie Janac’s single. Peter Atkins followed with a base hit down the 3B line to score Phil. Jeff Broussard continued to swing a hot bat as he singled to score Donnie with the 2nd run. Lucky Hoffman ground into a fielder’s choice for the 1st out. Ray Pilgrim lined a shot up the middle to bring Peter in for the 3rd run. After Adam Gordon popped out to 3B, Tommy DeLeon walked Don Roets to load the bases. Chris Hurst’s infield hit scored the 4th run of the frame. Tommy then proceeded to walk Ray Saldana to force in the 5th run of the inning. 2nd– the Sultans took the lead as Phil smacked a one-out triple down the right field line (on a pitch that umpire Tom Kelm had called as an illegal pitch!) and scored on Donnie’s groundout to 3B.
End of 2nd Score: Sultans 6 Keystones 5
Third Inning Recap:
Keystones- tallied three runs in the 3rd with the key blow coming on a three-run inside the park home run by John Flowers. Jack retired the leadoff batter, but Johnny Neville delivered a one-out single. His pinch runner was forced out at 2B on Mike H.’s grounder to 2B. Alex followed with a single and John drove a ball down the right field line that got past Lucky as John sped around the bases for an inside the park home run. Ken singled but Patrick flew out to RC to end the inning.
Sultans– rallied back with three runs to take the early lead. Jeff opened the inning with a sharp single, but Tommy was able to retire Lucky and Ray P. on flyball for the 1st two outs. Adam singles and Don walked for the 2nd time to load the bases. Chris H. hit a grounder to short that should have ended the inning but Mike’s throw to 2B was wide and allowed two runners to score on the play. Ray S. walked for the 2nd time, but Tommy got Jack on a grounder to 1B to end the inning.
End of 3rd Score: Sultans 9 Keystones 8
Fourth Inning Recap:
Keystones- were held scoreless in the 4th. Tommy led off with a grounder to shortstop for the 1st out. Mike M. walked and Bobby singled but Jack regrouped and was able to get Robby on a flyball to right center and Barry on a grounder to short to retire the side.
Sultans– failed to expand their lead as they were held scoreless as well. Phil singled to start the inning. Donnie flew out to CF for the 1st out. Peter singled and Jeff walked to load the bases. Lucky grounded to Mike M. at 3B, and he stepped on the bag and threw home to complete the inning ending double play.
End of 4th Score: Sultans 9 Keystones 8
Fifth Inning Recap:
Keystones- banged out eight hits and five runs in the inning to take a 13-9 lead. The bottom of the order came through as Henry, Greg and Johnny all had hits to start the inning and load the bases. Mike H. cracked a two-run single to start the scoring. Alex popped out to short for the only out of the inning. The next four batters (John Ken, Patrick and Tommy) all had hits to produce three more runs in their big five-run outburst.
Sultans- did not back down as the Sultans had their own five-run inning to regain their slim one-run lead. Ray P. ground out to SS for the 1st out but singles by Adam, Don and Chris loaded the bases. Ray S. knocked in the 1st run with an infield single. Jack singled to drive in the 2nd run. Phil hit into a fielder’s choice for the 2nd out, but a run did score on the play. Donnie and Peter completed the five-run inning with back-to-back run scoring singles.
End of 5th Score: Sultans 14 Keystones 13
Sixth Inning Recap:
Keystones- needing just one run to tie and two to take the lead in this closely fought game, the Keystones failed to generate any offense in the buffet. Mike M. popped out to Jeff at 3B for the first out. Bobby H. fouled out on a ball that went foul just before the 3B bag for the 2nd out. Robby gave some hope to the Keystones with a two-out single but Barry flew out to Phil in right center to end the game as the Sultans defeated the Keystones by a final score of 14-13.

Losses by the Pioneers and Keystones allowed the idle Braves to pick up a half-game and they now lead the Pioneers and the surging Senators by two full games. The Keystones fell into 4th place and remain a game ahead of the Sultans.

Game 1 8:30 a.m. Keystones (5-6-0) vs. Senators (5-5-0)
After three straight wins, the Senators have emerged as a legitimate contender for the crown. Can the Keystones rebound from Monday’s loss and knock the Senators down a peg and reclaim their place among the league leaders?
Game 2 9:30 a.m. Pioneers (5-5-0) vs. Braves (7-3-0)
Can the Pioneers get back on the winning track and keep the Braves from further separating from the pack? Which lineup will show up for the Braves and will it be enough to stop the hard-hitting Pioneers?
The Sultans will have a bye on Thursday, and their players will have priority in the draw.
