Game Day Gazette
April 10,2025
Another beautiful day to get the chance to play the game we love so much!!
Game 1 8:30 a.m. Braves (6-3-0) vs. Keystones (5-4-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Keystones– riding high from Monday’s come-from-behind win over the Pioneers, the Keystones were looking to move into a first-place tie with the front-running Braves in this contest. Mike Hill opened the game with a sharp groundball to SS Paul Rubin. Paul’s throw to 1B was low and away but mercenary, Lucky Hoffman, made a great play on the ball for the 1st out. John Flowers followed with a single and moved to 3B on Ken Brown’s double. Patrick Schmidt’s single score both runners as the Keystones jumped on top by a 2- score. P Earl King was able to avoid any further damage as he got the next two batters on fielder’s choice ground out to mercenary Henry Flores at 3B. 2nd–Robby Vickery led off the 2nd with a ringing single to right and Ken Brown came in to pinch run for him. Barry McRee fouled out for the 1st out. Margarito Canava hit a routine ground ball to SS, but Paul rushed the throw knowing Ken was flying towards the base and the throw sailed into right field allowing Ken to score and Margarito to move to 2B. Greg Tolander singled but was forced out at 2B on Johnny Nevilles groundout. Mike H. singled to drive in the 2nd run. John Flowers lifted a high drive to CF that went over Bobby Miller’s head for a two=run triple. Ken finished off the scoring with a hot shot up the middle that caromed off Earl’s leg for an RBI single. (Give a guy a break, this is the 3rd time Earl has been struck by batted ball since his return last week!).
Braves– down by seven, the Braves quickly responded with five runs in the 1st. Doc Hobar back in the lineup from a medical mission trip to Belize wasted no time in greeting P Mike Mordecai with a line drive that rolled to the fence for a lead off inside=the-park homerun. Bobby Miller flew out to John in CF for the 1st out. Paul Rubin laced a double down the left field line and scored on Lynn Simpson’s shot up the middle. Jim Foelker singled, and Earl King walked to load the bases. Jim scored on Billy Hill’s fielder’s choice groundout to 2B. Brian Rider and Dave Berra stroked back-to-back run scoring singles to complete the Braves five-run inning. 2nd– Mercenaries, Raul DeLeon and Henry Flores led off the inning with singles. Doc’s double drove in both runners to knot the score at 7-7. Bobby doubled and scored on Paul’s triple that got past John in right center. Lynn finished off the inning with another hard single up the middle for the Braves 2nd five-run inning.
End of 2nd Score: Braves 10 Keystones 7
Third Inning Recap:
Keystones– I need to thank Brain Rider and Joe Dayoc for keeping the scorebook so I could focus my attention on the actual game. The notes are a little foggy on this inning, but this is what I think happened. Patrick singled to lead off the inning as Raul replaced Earl on the mound. Mike M. fouled out ahead of Bobby Hawthorne’s single to left. Robby walked to load the bases. Barry hit a dribbler in front of the plate and Raul made a quick throw to Brian to get the force at home just ahead of the speedy Patrick streaking down the line for the 2nd out. Margarito singled to drive in the only run in the frame.
Braves- Mike M. shut down the Braves lineup without a run in the inning. Jim led off with a single and Earl lined out to 2B for the 1st out. The next two batters hit into successive fielder’s choice groundouts with 3B Henry Flores throwing to 2B Ken Brown for the outs.
End of 3rd Score: Braves 10 Keystones 8
Fourth Inning Recap:
Keystones- grabbed the lead with a four-run outburst. Mike H. and John led off with back-to-back singles. Ken hit a routine fly ball to CF that Bobby was unable to catch as Mike came around to score. Patrick singled to drive in John with the 2nd run. Mike M. flew out to Bobby in CF for the 2nd out, but Robby delivered a two-out double to score the final two runs in the inning for the Keystones and put the Keystones up by a score of 12-10.
Braves- Mike quickly retired the 1st two batters as Dave popped out to short and Raul hit a long drive to John in CF. Henry started the Braves two-out rally with a booming double to left center. Doc, completing his resounding return to the Braves lineup, ripped another drive that got past Patrick in left for Doc’s 2nd inside the park homerun of the game to tie the score. Bobby kept the rally going with a double to right. Paul followed with a hard ground ball to Mike backhand side. Mike’s throw to 1B went up the baseline and Robby could not make a play on the ball. Bobby scored and Paul ended up on 3B with an RBI “triple”. Lynn completed his perfect 3-3 day at the plate by smacking a ball up the middle to score Paul with the 4th run.
End of 4th Score: Braves 14 Keystones 12
Fifth Inning Recap:
Keystones- Margarito led off with a pop fly behind 3B that Paul was able to track down for the 1st out. Greg lined out to Raul for the 2nd out. Johnny hit a routine grounder to SS that should have been the final out but my throw to new 1B Billy Hill was low. Mike H. grounded the next pitch to Ss and Paul beat the runner to 2B for the final out as the Braves extended their 1st session lead with a hard-fought win over the Keystones.
.Final Score: Braves 14 Keystones 12
Game 2 9:30 a.m. Senators (3-5-0) vs. Sultans (3-6-0)
First & Second Inning Recap:
Sultans- after losing a close one on Monday vs. the front running Braves, the Sultans were looking to bounce back against the Senators. The first three batters reached base as Phil Stanch, Don Roets and Peter Atkins all singled to push the 1st run across. P Raul DeLeon retired Ray Pilgrim and Lucky Hoffman but Jeff Broussard came up with a big two-out two run double to give the Sultans a three-run inning. 2nd– After Raul struck out the first two batters in the inning, Chris Villareal singled and moved to 3B on Ray Saldana’s line shot double to right. Phil drove home both runners with a sharp single to the right side.
Senators-welcomed slugger Tim Coles back to the lineup after being out for a few games. Jerry Mylius led off with a single up the middle. Kurt Ashmos popped out to 2nd but Raul DeLeon tripled to score Jerry. Tim followed with a double to left field to score Raul before Jack Kelly was able to retire Henry Flores and Will Scheerer on infield groundouts. 2nd– the Creamsicles pounded out six hits on their way to a five-run 2nd inning. The Senators picked up four mercenaries for this game and their impact was clearly felt in this frame. Scott Wright singled with one out. Mike Hill was retired on a fly to right on a nice catch by Phil. Ken Brown and John Flowers singled to account for the 1st run of the inning. Jerry singled to bring Ken around to score. Kurt ripped a doubled to score John and Jerry. Raul finished off the inning with a deep drive to center to score Kurt as the senators grabbed a 7-5 lead.
End of 2nd Score: Senators 7 Sultans 5
Third Inning Recap:
Sultans- only managed to score a single run in the inning. Peter smoked a ball to deep center field for a leadoff triple and he scored on Ray’s single. The inning turned on Lucky’s double play groundout as Raul kept the Sultans in check.
Senators- Tim opened the 3rd with a sharp single to left. Henry and Will followed with back-to-back hits to score Tim. Roger was retired on a fielder’s choice and Scott singled to load the bases. Mike H. drilled a single to right to bring in two more runs. Ken wrapped up the scoring with a single to bring in Scott with the 4th run of the inning.
End of 3rd Score: Senators 11 Sultans 6
Fourth Inning Recap:
Sultans- brought on the big sticks in the 4th as they made the most of their four hits (all extra base variety) to put up three runs. Chris V. got things started with a one-out triple. He scored on Ray S.’s groundout to short. Phil blasted a two-out solo homer (inside the park). Don and Peter produced the final run with back-to-back doubles to narrow the lead to two runs.
Senators– were able to pretty much put this one out of reach with a five-run inning to extend their lead to seven runs. Raul doubled with one out. Tim (proving he is human after all) fouled out for the 2nd out of the frame. The next five batters (Henry, Will, Roger, Scott and Mike H.) all had hits to propel the Senators to a five-run inning.
End of 4th Score: Senators 16 Sultans 9
Fifth Inning Recap:
Sultans- heading into the buffet, the Sultans needed seven to tie and eight to take the lead, but it was not meant to be. Lucky and Jeff started the inning on a promising note with back-to-back hits. Adam Gordon ground into a force at 3B for the 1st out. Chris Hurst went down on strikes and Jack Kelly ground out to 1B to end the game.
Final Score: Senators 16 Sultans 9

Next Games: Monday April 14, 2025
Game 1 8:30 a.m. Senators (4-5-0) vs. Pioneers (5-4-0)
Can the Senators, coming off two straight wins, handle the Pioneers coming off their bye week or will the Pioneers emerge as the primary contender vs. the front running Braves?
Game 2 9:30 a.m. Keystones (5-5-0) vs. Sultans (3-7-0)
Sultans needing to right the ship to get back in the pennant race, can they prevail against the up and down Keystones? Or will the Keystones bounce back after Thursday’s loss to push the Sultans further down into the cellar?
The Braves will have a bye on Monday and their players will have priority in the draw.
All will be revealed on Monday, have a great weekend!
